I was just talking to a friend of mine this morning  and telling him about my book Hamir: The Fallen Prince of Ranthambore when he asked me how I had honed my photography skills over the years. This is a question I have been asked on numerous occasions. But today, it sort of touched a chord within myself and I started thinking about it. And this is what I think — Believe it or not, it has nothing to do with my camera, lenses or my travels. My secret is what I have learnt from the study of the work of great photographers from different genres of photography.  Over the years I have ..read more

Photographing Atlantic Puffins in Iceland

For some time, I had been wanting to travel to Iceland to photograph the Atlantic puffin, so when I decided to take a break from photographing tigers for my book, Hamir: The Fallen Prince of Ranthambore, I booked myself on a trip to Iceland. At  the time I had never really photographed birds, so I did not know what to expect. I knew I had to get myself a sturdy tripod so I got one that was ideal for the camera and lenses I was using at the time.  After a short layover in London and a short connecting flight, I arrived at Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland. I had booked myself at a h ..read more

Gear FAQ: wildlife photography

I wanted to take this opportunity to answer some of the frequently asked questions i get via social media relating to gear in the context of wildlife photography. What camera or lenses should I buy if I want to photograph wildlife? The simplest answer is, you buy what you can afford. But do keep in mind that investing in high quality lenses should be a priority over the camera. If you maintain your lenses they can easily last decades so investing in high quality prime lenses or zoom lenses could be a worthwhile effort.  What camera or lenses you buy would also depend on what you want ki ..read more

© Steve McCurry A photographer like Steve McCurry needs no introduction but for those who don’t know him or his work, he’s the award winning photographer who made the Afghan Girl portrait. It has to be one of the top 10 most recognisable portraits of all times. Afghan Girl portrait is just one of many iconic images he has made over the course of the last 3 decades. His work has made the cover of National Geographic on numerous occasions and is also a member of Magnum Photos’s. I got my hands on this book a few months ago and as the name suggests, it is a collection of his most iconic photogra ..read more

Monsoon in a tiger reserve has got to be one of the most invigorating experiences, ever. Till recently, there was limited access to tourists and photographers to Ranthambhore National Park during the monsoon season from July to September. Happily, access to Zones 6 to 10 is now allowed during the wet season.  On a typical monsoon day, I wake up early at the reserve, at my usual 430 a.m. Still in bed, I can hear the rain drops as they hit the concrete walkway outside my cottage at the Ranthambore Regency. I make my coffee and decide to have it in the veranda. As I step into the fres ..read more

“This is a beautiful book, and captures the glory of Ranthambore” – Mr Sukhram Bishnoi, Hon’ble Minister for Forest & Environment, Government of Rajasthan I officially launched my pet project Hamir: The Fallen Prince of Ranthambhore on the October 21 at 6 p.m. Indian Standard Time. I had originally planned a more personal and intimate affair at Ranthambore with my safari team and select members of the forest department and members of the local community, but we live in strange times. I had to make do with an e-launch.  Having said that, I was amazed at how well it turned out. The e ..read more

I have been busy promoting my new book – Hamir, The Fallen Prince of Ranthambore, and the praiseworthy efforts on the part of the Rajasthan Forest de-department to provide a sanctuary for the tigers here. And then I get the horrifying news of the tragic death of a tigress and her cub at the Bandhavgarh National Park in Madhya Pradesh.  Reports from Bandhavgarh, one of my favourite tiger reserves, said the tigress called ‘Solo’ and her four cubs had been seen near the buffer zone of the Park, a zone between the park and some villages. Villagers on their part have alleged she was responsib ..read more

As a fine-art photographer, I had never intended doing this book. All I had wanted to do was to create fine art prints for sale. But all that changed one day.  I distinctively remember waiting at Rajbagh lake hoping to sight the tigress called Arrowhead when I got news that a young cub was being sighted at a different part of the forest. Not getting much action at Rajbagh Lake, I asked my safari driver to take me to the sighting. And when I reached the area the cub had been sighted, I saw the sight that changed my life forever. There was this beautiful tiger, he was about six to eight mo ..read more
