What is Humanitarian Photography? The Importance of Storytelling.

I decided to write this article about a part of my work that is important to me, but I haven’t talked that much about it. It's been almost a decade since I’ve been working as a humanitarian photographer with a variety of NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations). The nonprofit organizations I have worked with are specialized in different fields: education, nutrition, healthcare, awareness, and environmental protection. I’ve helped them to create stories that inspire hope, educate, and connect with donors. I’ve taken images for awareness campaigns, effective fundraising, and to illustrate annual re ..read more

Sex Education Around the World | Central America Documentary Photographer My last assignment for the magazine “The Guardian Weekend,” based in London, was about looking at sex education and how it is taught to youth and/or children in different countries around the world. One of the places that I visited was a school in Managua in which a local NGO organizes workshops focused on teaching boys about healthy masculinity, gender equality, sex, and healthy relationships. The workshops at the school in Managua, which focus on boys, are organized by the Samaritan Project. The initiative is part of ..read more

2020. Halfway through. It has been a difficult year so far in that it's been both surprising and challenging. Not being able to see my loved ones and doing the things that I’m passionate about - photography and travel - have been difficult. However, 2020 has had such a nice and promising start. My calendar was filled with work trips and new adventures,  virtually without any day off. Destination weddings were happening in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Italy, and even Poland. Humanitarian and documentary photography for various NGOs, assignments for magazines, and trips to remote locations and c ..read more

The purchase of inspiration - Ometepe Island

Photography from my most recent trip to Ometepe. A paradise-like, volcanic island located in the southwest of the magnificent Cocibolca Lake  (also known as Lake Nicaragua) After my return to Central America a few months ago, I was working almost every day, whether it was traveling, shooting for assignments, doing weddings, or editing photos at home. All my photography work was for commercial purposes. I felt it got tiring and repetitive. Don’t get me wrong I love my job, but everyone needs a break at a certain point (I find this very important especially in such a creative environment li ..read more

Shooting film

I started my adventure with photography by shooting film, not because digital photography was unavailable at the time, (actually, it was already super popular), but because I wanted to learn how to shoot film first. I thought that limiting myself to 36 frames would push me to be more focused when taking photos. Also, I really liked the look of the film: its grain, imperfections, colors, and dynamic. It wasn’t the easiest way of learning. For example, you couldn’t see the results immediately after pressing the shutter, which means you had to wait until the film was developed. I probably would h ..read more

Baltic Sea Photography It’s been a decade since I’ve been to Poland’s Baltic Sea Coast. Vast white sand beaches, deep blue sea, dunes and surrounding forests full of heathers - I forgot how pretty it is. And the sand is thin like powder, pleasant to tread on. Gdansk, the largest city on the coast has changed a lot, modern buildings are creating harmonic fusion with the historic architecture. It is friendly to the visitors, and is a vivid and modern European city. Few Days at the Baltic coast ..read more

Travels with NGO and changes to my Blog I’m happy after diving my website. Having a separate platform for wedding photography (don’t forget to check kubaokonweddings.com!) allows me to explore more other subjects I’m attracted to. From now on, my blog will focus mostly on my travels and documentary photography. My journal is coming back to its roots. This year I went on several trips together with non-governmental organizations in order to document their efforts in different fields, issues they are facing, and stories of people involved. This type of work means many things: being on the road f ..read more

Dana & Christian | Destination Wedding Photography - Nicaragua Gorgeous Wedding in a Truly Epic Venue in San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua. Classy, gorgeous, filled with love - these few words I could use to describe the destination wedding of Dana and Christian - an amazing couple that has traveled from Miami to Nicaragua for their ceremony. The wedding venue was a marine house established on the top of a cliff that crowns over the San Juan Bay.  The location provided a truly epic setting for the couple to get ready with their closest friends and family. It offered a venue bursting with co ..read more

A quick walkthrough on 4 types of cities in Mexico

A quick walkthrough on 4 types of cities I came across on my journey through Mexico - photography Fusion of Color, music, art, flavors, - it would be hard to describe Mexico in a short review. It’s huge (it feels huge), it’s complex. It covers nearly two million square kilometers and is a kaleidoscope of landscapes. Here you can find exotic beaches, tropical rainforests, rugged mountains, deserts, sprawling metropolises, and colorful colonial towns. I would be lying if I said I know it all after a few weeks of traveling. It left me unsatisfied with a weighty feeling of missing something - ther ..read more

Wedding Photography in Costa Rica The Rain Season, also known as the Green Season, is simply stunning - this is not an exaggeration. It is a time when nature wakes up after half a year of harsh sun and literally not a single drop of rain. The tropical summer in Central America - especially at the lowlands like the Nicoya Peninsula, Guanacaste Province and Rivas can get really hot - it leaves the land dry and in a pastel palette. Then, in June everything changes. After the first rainfall, Nature starts to flourish, the greenery becomes lush, tropical forests come alive, colors are rich and vivi ..read more
