Episode 199: Greatest Hits Volume 3
Preheated Podcast

It’s Greatest Hits month and the good memories just keep on coming. Stefin recalls Episode 38, the first episode recorded from her new home in London. Straight from her kitchen counter perched on top of an IKEA box, she taught Andrea an elegant and appealing new term for potlucks. Garden party, anyone? Both hosts agree that with over 200 episodes and perhaps over 400 recipes reviewed, there’s never an excuse to run out of ideas. With Halloween right around the corner, Stefin has her eye on the Monster Eye Cake from Carrie at TheCakeBlog.com. Andrea loves Listener Brad’s obsession with a flami ..read more

Andrea’s trying her hand at the tangzhong method of bread making with King Arthur’s version of Japanese Milk Bread Rolls. After a quick call to the KAF Baker’s Hotline (which she loves to do), Andrea reports these light and fluffy rolls reminded her of Parker House rolls, and were quickly devoured in her house. Review: Homemade Royce’s Nama Chocolate from Jun & Tonic Both hosts modified this recipe to make fewer than the 125 chocolates the full recipe yields. Stefin halved hers, while Andrea went down to 1/4. (It was easy to do thanks to the weights included in the recipe.) Both hosts use ..read more

Happy Valentine’s Day week! Today’s show starts with a Public Service Announcement from Andrea and Stefin … don’t go out to dinner on Valentine’s Day. It’s often expensive and you’ll feel rushed. Instead, stay in and treat your sweeties (and yourself!) to some Preheated bakes! The hosts reflect on the history of ever-popular conversation hearts, pioneered by the New England Candy Company (maker of the NECCO wafer) in 1902. They were originally much bigger, and able to fit such pulse-quickening phrases as: “How Long Shall I Have to Wait? Please Be Considerate.” As it turns out, centuries ..read more

Hot on the heels of their 2020 trend report in Episode 159, Stefin and Andrea are happy to see Australian vanilla company Queen’s baking trend report, and even happier that Preheated is right on trend, or planning to be, in the coming months. Review: Small-Batch Shortbread Pumpkin Pie Bars from Baking Mischief The Small-Batch Shortbread Pumpkin Pie Bars from Baking Mischief provided a petite portion of pumpkin pie with a shortbread crust, but were they the right flavor for January? Andrea and Stefin both struggled with the crust — Andrea’s developed a large hole which allowed the filling to s ..read more

Stefin and Andrea officially kick off Preheated’s Fourth Season (!) by reminding Listeners about the UK’s Stir-Up Sunday on November 24. This Victorian-era tradition has evolved into a lovely way to kick-off the holiday baking season — especially Christmas puddings and cakes, which need a few weeks to “cure.” Stefin has been making her favorite mincemeat on this day for the past few years, and Andrea enjoys her own tradition of a pre-holiday pantry clean-out. Listeners: How do you get ready for the holiday baking season? Another important event happening in the UK this week is Stefin’s birthd ..read more

Stefin loved finding a treasure trove of old Martha Stewart Everyday Food magazines while on holiday in the Pacific Northwest this summer, and was reminded how fun vintage magazines can be. Don’t ignore them when you’re stopping by a Little Free Library, garage sale, or thrift store! Magazines published within the last 10 years are still relatively up-to-date, while older volumes can be a source of hilarious fascination, much like Stefin’s beloved Five Seasons of Cranberry cookbook, which she first mentioned in Episode 95. Did you know you can call your Preheated hosts? Andrea’s giddy after a voicemail from a listener tips her off on where to find passion fruit purée in Olympia. (Thanks Mar!) If you have a question, comment or suggestion, give the Preheated hotline a call at 802-276-0788. (Operators are not standing by, but a voicemail box is.) Loyal Listeners know Stefin originally thought she and her family would spend two years in London. Very happily, their stay has been extended another year, so listeners can expect more trans-Atlantic banter and baking until at least June 2020. “Luscious,” “Delightful” Ze ..read more

June is right around the corner and it’s prime time for “Dads and Grads!” We’d love to know what you’re whipping up to celebrate the fathers and the graduates in your life. Andrea thinks her Father’s Day bake needs to include peanut butter, and Stefin’s recommending Peanut Butter and Chocolate Thumbprint Cookies from Tesco magazine along with the option to replace the peanut butter with tahini. The Peanut Butter Pie from Kevin & Amanda featured in Episode 60 is another good choice, along with the Minimalist Baker’s Tahini Chocolate Banana Soft Serve from Episode 81.
