Montgomery’s capitol city has changed the world and much of that change was planned out in restaurants. Local diners became safe places for leaders and activists to meet and develop strategies. These restaurants not only created a gathering spot for justice but fueled those seeking to bring about a brighter future for generations to come. Montgomery is chock-full of history and delicious food. Here’s a look at some of the oldest restaurants in Montgomery that are still standing and serving up good eats.
Chris’ Hot Dogs has been serving up dogs covered in their special sauce for over 100 years. Founded in 1917, this locally loved joint has seen its fair share of famous customers, from Hank Williams, Sr., Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks to FDR and Elvis Presley.

Juneteenth is the oldest known commemoration of the ending of slavery in Texas but is used to mark the overall ending of slavery in the United States. The Rosa Parks Museum will host its third annual Juneteenth celebration with a block party between Lee Street and Molton. The festival will have local food and merchant vendors, performances, a children’s area, and free tours of the museum.
