Melissa Averinos is an artist who loves to draw, paint and quilt faces. She also happens to be a member of Modern Quilters of Rhode Island, and at our February meeting she talked about her artistic journey, from her high school days when art helped her through severe anxiety, to today, when it has become a career that has brought her joy and confidence. It was fascinating to see photos of her large quilts in progress and hear about her process of auditioning fabrics, refining the design, and piecing or appliqueing it all together. We are swapping scrappy windmill blocks at the February through June 2020 meetings. They’re easy to make and a great way to use up scraps! For the swap, make six blocks with colorful “blades” and low volume background fabrics. Strip piece and make all six the same or use a variety of scraps and mix them up. The following tutorial makes one block. Step 1 Cut four 2.5” x 3” rectangles from your colorful scraps and four from your low volume scraps. You should have eight 2.5” x 3” rectangles total. Step 2 Pair each color rectan ..read more
