I decided to plan a trip to Transylvania on a hunch. A photo online with a cobblestone lane and colorful houses grabbed my attention and looked nothing like the images in my mind of a place where the legend of Dracula began. There are so many amazing places to visit in Romania yet it hasn’t […] The post How to Plan a Trip to Transylvania Romania appeared first on The Globetrotting Teacher ..read more

The walled historic center of Sighisoara Romania with its 14th-century clock tower was finally visible in the distance as the train neared the station. A few hours earlier, I’d departed from Sibiu on a local Soviet-era train covered in an array of spray paint. The train had chugged through the unspoiled green Romanian countryside. The walled historic center of Sighisoara Romania with its 14th-century clock tower was finally visible in the distance as the train neared the station. A few hours earlier, I’d departed from Sibiu on a local Soviet-era train covered in an array of spray paint. The train had chugged through unspoiled green Romanian countryside. It squealed to a stop in people’s gardens and at seemingly random gravel road intersections where horse and carriages waited to pass. I’d enjoyed seeing such rural daily life scenes, but now, I was anxious to arrive. When I saw the fortified medieval city of Sighisoara a ..read more

Arriving into Rasnov, your gaze is immediately directed upwards. You’ll notice the town’s name boldly announced with white letters perched on the hilltop above like its nearby neighbor, Brasov. The impressive Rasnov Fortress emerges from the green forest just beyond. The stone facade and orange rooftops circle the hilltop spying any potential invaders. The town of Rasnov is just 9 miles from Brasov in the Transylvania region of Romania. Rasnov Fortress dates back over 700 years and has a long history as a successful strategic defense point. Historical evidence shows the fortress only surrende ..read more

Brasov, Romania is the gateway into Transylvania. After coming from Bucharest, the pace of life noticeably slows. The air cools. There’s a relaxed, romantic feel as you wander through Brasov’s narrow cobblestone streets. The 13th-century city transports you back in time with an unassuming tangible authenticity. Brasov is not pretending to be a medieval city. It actually is. Brasov is one of Romania’s most visited cities and for good reason. It’s situated in a Transylvanian sweet spot, making it an ideal base for at least part of your Transylvania itinerary. However, with plenty of things to do ..read more

While traveling solo through Romania, I was fortunate to meet Ambrose and Trisha. Truthfully, we only made casual eye contact on the local train from Sibiu to Sighisoara. They were taking in the landscape and I was busy thanking the kind old woman next to me who kept insisting I eat the snacks she offered. So, it would seem unlikely that any interaction or connection would develop once we’d arrived at the station. However, the UNESCO World Heritage Village of Sighisoara is tiny and we seemed to be the only travelers on the train. (Psst…A sign you should visit Romania before everyone else does ..read more
