Subscribe Hi friends! I hope your week has been going well and that you’ve been growing in your knowledge of Christ. I am in the midst of a bit of a challenging week, since it’s midterm season here at Southern Seminary. I took an exam for my Personal Evangelism class today that consisted of 40 memory verses, plus information from the lectures. Needless to say, that exam had been a considerable source of stress. I was relieved to have it behind me. But now, I’m staring down a Greek midterm that looks quite daunting. Nevertheless, after I had completed my exam, I was walking across the seminary ..read more

Shep-Con Q&A: What We All Missed
The Reformed Millennial Blog

If you run in conservative evangelical circles, then you are well aware of the debate that has been swirling around the issue of social justice and how it relates to the Gospel. If you are ignorant of this controversy, a cursory glance at Twitter will quickly fix that. To ever so briefly summarize, over the summer a group of theologians crafted a statement on social justice and its relation to the Gospel that made waves throughout evangelical Christianity. Some well-known theologians signed it. Some didn’t. It caused a bit of a stir for a while, but (at least to me) it seemed like things sett ..read more

Hi friends! It’s been a minute since my last update here, but I assure you, I’m still cranking away at the Tim Challies reading challenge, even though my pace has slowed considerably due to this semester kicking into high gear. I have two midterms coming up, so I would appreciate your prayer for those. In the meantime, I would like to take a few minutes with you to observe a verse from the book of Mark. I just finished up translating Mark 1:1-15 for a Greek homework assignment, and yesterday Dr. Vickers, my professor, highlighted verse 7. It reads, “And he [John the Baptist] preached, saying ..read more

Sanctified Affliction

Subscribe During our move from West Virginia, my copy of the Puritan prayer collection The Valley of Vision ended up on my bookshelf rather than my desk where it usually sits for easy access. So until yesterday, I hadn’t read from it since probably July! Which is a shame, because that book is jam-packed with soul-refreshing prayers. I cracked it open the other night before I spent some time in the Bible and came upon this phrase: If thou shouldest give me choice to live in pleasure and keep my sins, or to have them burnt away with trial, give me sanctified affliction. What a prayer. The author ..read more

Subscribe A little over a week ago, I posted an article about the 2019 Christian Reading Challenge that Tim Challies designed. My goal this year is to get through the avid reader plan, which means I will (Lord willing) read 26 books on this list before 2019 is over. I decided to chronicle my journey through the challenge here and hope you join me! I will be posting about each book I read after I finish it. You can join me in the challenge by downloading the list of books here and then letting me know on Twitter @1689Millennial that you’re doing the challenge! There’s still time to jump in! Do You Want to Read More in 2019?
The Reformed Millennial Blog

Subscribe Every year, Tim Challies (my favorite blogger and never-ending source for Kindle deals) puts out a reading challenge for Christians. It’s designed to help you track your reading, read more, and read a wider variety of literature. It’s divided into four distinct plans - the light reader (13 books), avid reader (26 books), committed reader (52 books), and obsessed reader (104 books). The idea is that you pick a plan and try to complete it by the end of 2019. If you complete your goal before the year is up, then you try to finish the next plan. My favorite part about the plan is that Ti ..read more

How Will You Be Remembered?
The Reformed Millennial Blog
by Caleb Eakle

Subscribe Everyone leaves a legacy. For most, that legacy will be left to a small number of people. Their family, their workplace, their church. For others, that legacy will be far-reaching. Not only will they be remembered by their families and co-workers, but they will be remembered by those they influenced through speaking, writing, business, or some other medium. But no matter the size or scope of the legacy, a legacy will be left nonetheless. No matter who you are, when you die, you will be remembered for something. If you died today, what would you be remembered for? That’s not a questio ..read more

Don't Give Up on Your Bible-Reading Plan
The Reformed Millennial Blog
by Caleb Eakle

Subscribe If you’re anything like me, last year around this time you searched the internet for a Bible reading plan because you wanted to read more of the Bible in 2018. Then, come January 1st, you set your alarm an hour earlier, made a cup of coffee, read day 1 of the plan, and promptly checked off the little box with a smile of satisfaction.  This probably continued for a few weeks, maybe even a few months, but the inevitable finally happened sometime around May or June – things came up, life got busy, and you sat down at the end of July to a Bible reading plan that you were hopelessly ..read more

Some Meditations on Meditation
The Reformed Millennial Blog
by Caleb Eakle

Subscribe Meditation has changed my devotional life. A little over a month ago, I listened to Dr. Whitney at Southern Seminary say that the greatest devotional need of most Christians is meditation. “What we have here is a failure to meditate,” he would say in Cool Hand Luke fashion. But I wasn’t quite convinced. Yeah, it sounded awesome. Mediate on Scripture, soak up more of the Word like water soaks up tea from a tea bag, get to the point where you can actually remember what you read in your devotions in the morning - great stuff. But does it actually work? Can I really, truly, actually, for ..read more
