Your Gifts at Work: October-December 2023 January 29, 2024 TRANSFORMing Health Care Access in Liberia In November, our program manager, Tiawanlyn Godwin-Akpan, took a trip into rural Liberia as part of our TRANSFORM project. The roads were so bad that one of the three vehicles broke down and we continued with only two!  TRANSFORM supports Liberia’s ministry of health as they make quality care and treatment accessible to everyone affected by neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). While the progress of remote health facilities was encouraging, this trip showed us some of the challenges faced ..read more

Your Gifts at Work: July-September 2023 October 17, 2023 Gathering Stories of Hope Around the World In August, several ALM staff from the U.S. and U.K. traveled to DR Congo and Ghana to visit our partners and projects. Loving Our Neighbors in the World of Global Health  June 21, 2022 Sometimes, we read Jesus’ command to “love our neighbor as ourselves” as something that motivates us to be kind to people around us. It’s easy to hear these words as instructions for each of us as individuals. Working in global health, however, we are challenged to think more broadly. When we consider Christ’s words in this context, we have to move beyond person-to-person acts of kindness and consider bigger  questions: What care do we want for ourselves when we’re sick? Who among our local or global “neighbors” la ..read more

Bekah goes to Africa Ghana Ghana was the next stop on our team’s trip to Africa! There we visited with staff in our hospitals, and people who were utilizing our early diagnostic and treatment initiatives. In the effort to care and cure, education is so important! Our partners on the ground in Ghana do the daily work of educating their neighbors and friends in how to spot early signs of leprosy and other NTDs, and how to seek help. One young woman we met with, Faustina, has had her life changed by your generosity! Fifteen years ago Faustina had a severe case of Buruli Ulcer affecting her leg ..read more

Bekah goes to Africa It is so important that our staff share a passion for the work of American Leprosy Missions and get to experience the impact of the mission. This summer, our long-term tenured staffer, Bekah, was able to visit the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as Ghana. Here is a little bit about her trip in her own words. Congo So many families and individuals in Congo are being served by your generosity. A nine-year-old boy, Simon, has an especially moving story. Simon is suffering from a flesh-eating Buruli ulcer which was not diagnosed until it had advanced quite far. The ulc ..read more

The Jagruti Projects: Your 2023 Impact in India and Nepal July 25, 2023 We have exciting results from the past year of advocacy and education in the Jagruti projects! Local women, who completed our initial training two years ago, are reaching their villages as community health workers (CHWs), bringing life-saving information about neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) practices. As they’ve built relationships, visited villages, and met wi ..read more
