Little more than a year after the passing of proprietor Tom Stobl at the age of 81, one of America’s legendary bowling venues — Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park, Michigan — is being sold to multi-unit operator Bowlero Corp. The acquisition brings the company’s center count in Michigan to six. Thunderbowl opened in 1962 and was purchased by Strobl and his brother Jim in 1997. In 1999, the center hosted the PBA’s first World Series of Bowling, a budget-stretching venture that enabled the PBA to tape multiple telecasts without the costs involved in moving from city to city. The center is the large ..read more

A 1972 advertisement for Holiday Lanes in Lansing, Michigan, proclaimed, “The Automatic Scorers Are Here!” The ad also listed the center’s amenities, which included a cocktail lounge, billiards, snack bar and — extremely important in south-central Michigan in the summertime — air conditioning. Holiday Lanes opened 10 years before that ad appeared, and during bowling’s boom years the 40-lane center was packed with leagues. Fifty years after it opened, the center was sold and rechristened Spare Time Entertainment — no relation to the chain of the same name operated by Bowl New England, but with ..read more

The city of Hurricane, Utah, is known for its historic peach and pecan orchards, as well as its proximity to Zion National Park.
