Incident thyroid nodules are associated with excessive weight among children, according to study findings published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.
Although the prevalence of thyroid nodules is relatively low among children and adolescents, up to 26% of reported cases carry the risk of malignancy. Previous research findings suggest a risk between incident thyroid nodules and obesity or overweight, but these studies do not establish causality.
To investigate the longitudinal risk of thyroid nodule development among children with overweight and obesity, researchers in ..read more

Acquisition of a FreeStyle Libre continuous glucose monitor (CGM) is associated with significant improvements in glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) among adults with type 2 diabetes receiving glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) therapy, according to study findings presented at the 17th International Conference on Advanced Technologies & Treatments for Diabetes held in Florence, Italy, on March 6, 2024.
Although CGMs and GLP-1 therapy are both linked to glycemic improvements among adults with type 2 diabetes, the effect of their concurrent use is unknown.
To determine whether use of a CGM as an adjunc ..read more

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) were associated with a nearly 40% increased risk for major osteoporotic fractures, although those receiving biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs) may have a fracture risk comparable to individuals without RA, according to study results published in Rheumatic & Musculoskeletal Diseases Open.
Rheumatoid arthritis is known to increase the risk for fragility fractures. While new treatments are greatly improving RA outcomes, whether these treatments are linked to reduced fracture risk is unknown. Researchers in Norway aimed to determi ..read more

Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are increasingly excluded from randomized clinical trials (RCTs) of cardiovascular medications, a new study finds. Their “systematic exclusion” has led to substantial evidence gaps in using cardiovascular medications in this population.
According to Robin W. M. Vernooij, PhD, of University Medical Center Utrecht in the Netherlands, and colleagues, “even though over 90% of patients with CKD are prescribed [cardiovascular risk management] medications, evidence is limited on the safety and effectiveness of these medications in this population.” As CKD pr ..read more

Antidepressant pharmacotherapy for late-life depression (LLD) improves cognitive function in older adults, specifically in domains of memory and learning. These improvements are likely due, in part, to the improvement of depressive symptoms, according to study results published in The American Journal of Psychiatry.
Previous research has shown that LLD is frequently reported in older adults and is a major driver of morbidity. Although antidepressants have been effective in treating LLD, it is unclear whether antidepressant pharmacotherapy affects cognitive function in this population and there ..read more
