To perform endoscopy in patients with urinary diversions requires specific endoscopic skills, which can currently only be gained in clinical practice. We created a 3D printed ex vivo ileal conduit model (stoma and conduit with ureters and 2 kidneys) to simulate “conduitoscopy” and evaluated the realism and limitations of the model ..read more

Editorial Comment on “Natural History of Artificial Urinary Sphincter Erosion: Long-Term Lower Urinary Tract Outcomes and Incontinence Management”
Urology - Gold Journal
by Keith F. Rourke
19h ago
Urethral erosion after implantation of an artificial urinary sphincter (AUS) is a devastating event with substantial negative impacts on patient quality of life. Because of this, delineating the consequences and outcomes after cuff erosion is highly relevant. Patients at particular risk are those with a "fragile urethra" including a history of prior AUS, concurrent radiation, or previous urethroplasty.1 This analysis of 194 patients contains several important findings related to patient-centered clinical care and counselling ..read more

Editorial Comment on "The yield of genetic testing in management of nephrolithiasis"
Urology - Gold Journal
by Gregory Tasian

The increasing availability of genetic testing and emergence of RNA interference treatments for primary hyperoxaluria type 1 (PH1) has created new opportunities to identify patients with monogenic causes of kidney stone disease and, for the few with PH1, to initiate effective treatments. The ensuing challenge is to identify the patients who are the most likely to have a monogenic cause of stones and therefore would be most likely to benefit from genetic testing. Such a focused approach would not only be cost effective but would also spare those with a very low likelihood of a pathogenic geneti ..read more

Editorial comment on “Sequential intravesical chemotherapy for treatment naïve, high-risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancer: oncologic outcomes, tolerance, and comparison to contemporary controls
Urology - Gold Journal
by Kyle A. Richards

It is an exciting time to be a bladder cancer surgeon as new and emerging approaches are rapidly occurring to benefit out patients. One such development involves the use of sequential chemotherapy- gemcitabine and docetaxel (gem/doce) administered in that order intravesically. Initial retrospective reports showed promise for this regimen in the bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) non-responsive setting. Then as the BCG shortage became more widespread, centers began using it more regularly in the BCG naïve setting when access to adequate BCG was restricted ..read more

Editorial Comment on “Getting it Across the Finish Line – Publication Rates of Abstracts Presented at a Major Urologic Conference”
Urology - Gold Journal
by Adam Hass, Kristin G. Baldea
5d ago
We congratulate the authors on their manuscript investigating the conversion rate of abstracts to published manuscripts from a major urologic conference. This is a provocative topic as healthcare budgets tighten and the value of academic conferences may be called into question. As the authors point out, many abstracts submitted to national and local conferences remain inaccessible to the majority of practicing clinicians without eventually being published in a journal. In their analysis, 64% of abstracts presented at a major regional conference were never converted to publications ..read more
