Hi, I’m looking for input on the sample prep/metallography for observing the microstructure in grade 1 or 2 titanium. Currently I’m using a process outlined by Buehler and Vander Voort (coarse grit 320/400, 9 um polish, 0.05 colloidal silica 0.05 um + 30 % hydrogen peroxide on the final polish) where I’m getting a good polish, the sample is very flat, and I can faintly see the microstructure optically. If I then do a swab etch with Kroll’s (even for just 1 second) it appears to over etch, or just doesn’t really evenly etch/attack. Hello, I need help with a school project. As part of a project, my professor has asked me to quantify the Si% of an aluminum alloy. The microstructure is below. I'm pretty confident it is Al-204.0-T4, based on some hardness testing (45HRB) and other testing. It is a cast alloy from a table base. What would be the best method of extracting gold from these black sands with limited to no processing equipment? Please don't mention panning and end there. That's common knowledge.
