About the stretch reflex and fascia :
Muscle Pain: It May Actually Be Your Fascia

What is fascia?
Fascia is a thin casing of connective tissue that surrounds and holds every organ, blood vessel, bone, nerve fiber and muscle in place. The tissue does more than provide internal structure; fascia has nerves that make it almost as sensitive as skin. When stress ..read more

Every now and then if I go in a lake, or even just after doing some work on my feet, I will go to move, I don't know if it's always the same movement or not since the pain basically makes me forget the last few moments before it happened, but it will just randomly trigger a very massive foot cramp, it feels like my toes want to turn the other way and like my foot is in a vice along the sides being squeezed. It will start with one foot for about 15 minutes to half an hour of excruciating pain, then move to the other foot.
I've mentioned this to my doctor as well as a foot specialist but they h ..read more

When you're feeling a bit down, striking up conversations with strangers might be the last thing on your mind.
But such encounters may actually make you feel happier, research has suggested.
It is one of eight simple 'happiness hacks' devised by scientists at the University of Bristol.
Writing gratitude letters, conducting acts of kindness and trying out meditation are among other key measures found to improve mental wellbeing.
The four other checkpoints relate to getting sufficient sleep, exercising, savouring experiences and drawing attention to positive parts of the day, for instance ..read more

You can estimate your maximum heart rate based on your age. To estimate your maximum age-related heart rate, subtract your age from 220. For example, for a 50-year-old person, the estimated maximum age-related heart rate would be calculated as 220 – 50 years = 170 beats per minute (bpm).
Well, do they mean sustained HR? I suppose not. Anyway, I go over my maximum sometimes and maybe by plenty
I bought HR monitors just before the pandemic and have used them ever since. I quad skated the streets during the pandemic, daily. I maxed out at maybe 160 bpm, but usually was quite a ways below that f ..read more

I have it, severe, in both hands. First knew I likely had an issue with it over 20 years ago when I had a difficult to diagnose and treat left shoulder problem. That came crucial one day almost 30 years ago while doing my daily 2 mile lap swim. Had to stop and I have never tried lap swimming again. I used to be very aggressive in the pool (I had a reputation!). Before my ~55 minute 2 mile swim I'd spend 1 1/2 hours in the weight room. I was very dedicated to physical fitness. I still am, but I can't do those things like I used to.
A few years later, when I was on COBRA, I was referred to a hi ..read more

When I was younger and had no obligations it was not a problem to get 10,000+ steps in and then spend 45-60 mins at the gym each day. Now I am in my late 30s and have plenty of obligations between career, family, house projects. I don't have the time to do 10k steps and go to the gym. Due to my schedule I can do about 1 hr 15 minutes of exercise per day. I've been splitting it mostly like 30 minutes at the gym and 30 running and 15 walking, which, along with other misc. walking around the house, gets me to about 7,500 steps.
I am trying to lose about 5 lbs. I'm not overweight but definitely n ..read more

Was at most dimly aware of this, I've seen the term but never researched it. A comment to current NY Times article on sourdough baking got me curious.
This is toxic, can be carcinogenic. So, to be avoided, obviously.
Well, poked a bit and this to-me very informative page explains a whole lot. Very interesting is the comment down in the page that the darker coffee roasts have less of this. Counter intuitive!
