As a serious beach enthusiast, I don’t really need a reason to visit a beach destination. Other members of my family, however, don’t feel the same way. They need some other draw, especially in the off-season. South Walton County in Florida offers mild weather and plenty of things to do near Sandestin during the fall, winter, and spring seasons.   On a recent visit, something stood out to me. There’s a sense of community in South Walton County. Celebrating and supporting good causes go hand in hand with these communities. Their favorite things to celebrate in this laid-back but cultur ..read more

Southern recipes are my jam. I feel a connection to them since I’m a Southern gal and travel around the SouthEast for leisure. I was introduced to this Atlantic Beach Pie recipe when visiting North Carolina. It starts with a unique saltine cracker crust and then it’s filled with a refreshing lemon-lime custard, and finished with fresh whipped topping. It’s the perfect light summer dessert! The History of Atlantic Beach Pie Atlantic Beach is located in North Carolina and part of the Crystal Coast. Some people refer to the pie as “Atlantic Beach Lemon Pie” but it’s delicious no matter what you ..read more

The Crescent City has a reputation for nightlife and adult fun, but there’s plenty of things to do in New Orleans with kids. If you dig a little deeper than city’s facade, and peel away the attractions geared towards adults, you’ll find some fascinating attractions that your kids will love. They’re not obvious, less advertised and your itinerary will take you beyond French Quarter, but I promise you there are fabulous ways for families to enjoy New Orleans. Before I sing the praises of the Georgia State Parks, I want to confirm that I’m a huge fan of Georgia’s twelve National Park System sites. I love the mix of history, nature, and culture they represent. Did you know that there are no official national parks in Georgia? We’ve got historic sites, seashores, trails, monuments, battlefields, and military parks. All are part of the National Park System, but none have the “national park” designation. We’re working on that. Meanwhile, Georgia State Parks are not just holding their own; they are a treasure trove waiting to be discovered. With 63 parks ..read more

How NOT To Go Camping and Hiking With Kids
Savvy Mama Lifestyle

When my older boys were young, I decided we would be a super outdoorsy family. That was to be our “thing.” So, I started with a hike on a trail in the North Georgia mountains, about 45 minutes from my house. Did I have experience with this trail? Had it been recommended to me? No, and no. I read about it in a book. Here are all the ways I was stupid: ● When I was hiking with kids, I didn’t tell my husband where we were going. ● The boys drank almost all the water on the drive up to the trail. Seriously? ● I need help to read a map properly. ● I think I had some band-aids in my backpack. Let ..read more

The Florida Panhandle State Park That’s Almost a Secret Spot for Vacationers

Dreamy white sand beaches, secluded campsites that require an isolated hike, and cabins that are steps from the bay. T.H. Stone Memorial St. Joseph Peninsula State Park makes other state parks seem lackluster. The official name of the park is a mouthful to say, but the views you’ll find are jaw-dropping. Experts have called it America’s Best State Park, yet it’s missing crowds. I think it’s a Florida Panhandle state park that’s easily missed because it’s almost secretive.  Florida’s Panhandle is full ..read more
