Taking on the World A team from Goodwood recently accomplished an aviation first – flying around the globe in a Spitfire. Belgian attraction raising funds for replica Spitfire

Staff at the 1st Wing Historical Center (1WHC) at Beauvechain, Belgium, are attempting to raise 60,000 Euros (£50,390) by April 30 in order to acquire a full size replica of a Spitfire Mk.IX. The exhibit, which is to be built by GB Replicas of Catfield, will bear the colours of both 349 and 350 Squadrons – Belgian manned RAF units that flew in World War Two. Wg Cdr Paul Farnes DFM AE, one of the last surviving veterans of the Battle of Britain, has died at the age of 101. Paul flew Hawker Hurricanes in the Battle of France with 501 Squadron, gaining his first air-to-air victories before serving throughout the summer in the defence of Britain. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal in October 1940, having shot down five enemy aircraft in August alone. He subsequently flew in both Malta and North Africa with 229 Squadron, and ended the war with 124 Squadron and with the acting rank of wing commander.
