Based on the low-brow nature of this column, I bet I'm not going to shock you when I say that I indeed have a day job. My penchant for a low profile and a deep ignorance of social media marketing - not to mention meager writing chops - has left me little way of monetizing my telemark content. Thus I land at a stiff and cold desk five days a week. While I’ve enjoyed being published – and somehow lucked into having a telemark column of all things here at Powder – I can ..read more

Could a Portable Lift Change Backcountry Skiing?

It wasn't shaping up to be a great day at Lolo Pass. The already-thin Montana snowpack was being pummeled by warm April weather, my girlfriend decided she'd rather do something other than go backcountry skiing, and I'd forgotten my bear spray. When I pulled into the visitors' center lot, I realized that I wasn't the only one who had doubts about Lolo's ski-ability. Two other cars were in the lot—an obligatory Forest Service truck and a flame-emblazoned minivan full of what looked like snowboarders, minus the snowboards. But I had a mission. In my pack was Zoa Engineering's PL1, a newfangled, p ..read more

Ski good—get paid. That's the story for Lake Tahoe local Noah Gaffney, who just secured $1000 in GoPro bucks for an impressive double backflip. Gaffney laced his stunt off a cliff called Goodwill's, located on Palisades Tahoe's piste. Tap the video below to play. View this post on Instagram A post shared by GoPro (@gopro) Gaffney put this double down earlier this season, schlepping himself not once but three times up to Goodwill's—the cliff, accessible from the Granite Peak lift, requires about 20 minutes of hiking. Worth the effort? No doubt. Gaffney's double backflip off Goodwill's is pr ..read more

Powder aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission. In early April, I had the opportunity to visit the DPS Factory in Salt Lake City’s Granary District, for a tour centered around the new Carbon Pagoda Tour CFL skis. After learning about the product, the process, and hearing from passionate ski builders, I highly suggest taking the opportunity to visit a ski factory if you get one. A lot of work goes into creating a good backcountry ski. The design needs to balance stability and mass to offer performance on the downhi ..read more
