As we head into another holiday season, I decided it wouldn’t hurt to repeat a post that lists some of our historical fiction that are set during the winter holidays. These include myriad times, places, and different kinds of celebrations. Whatever your pleasure, do enjoy. Viking: The Greenland by Katie Aiken Ritter (Winter Solstice) ICELAND, 982 A.D. A SHIP OF OUTLAWS. A WOMAN, ALONE. Dangerous seas…and even more dangerous secrets on board. Iceland’s powerful Althing Council has convicted seafarer Tiller Thorvaldsson of murder – to force him on a ship for a perilous quest in search of a leg ..read more

A few years ago I marked the passing of legendary actress Joan Fontaine by curling up on a lazy Sunday afternoon with two of my favorite films: first Suspicion, then Rebecca. Both films cover similar territory. A shy, unsure-of-herself young woman marries a charming gentleman who sweeps her away from the dull life she’s known. Trouble isn’t far behind. The heroine of Suspicion comes to believe that her handsome husband (Cary Grant!) is planning to kill her for her money. And in Rebecca, as almost anyone of my generation would know, the nameless narrator battles the op ..read more

Historical Repeats: Volcanic Eruption of Callisti–The Lost City of Atlantis? by Rebecca Lochlann

The island in the Mediterranean nowadays called Santorini has had many names throughout the centuries. One of the oldest known names, and the one I use, is Callisti. In ancient Greek, it means “The Most Beautiful,” and is alternately spelled Kalliste. Strongyle, another of Santorini’s ancient names, meant, “The Round One.” The Santorini caldera by Sorbis, Shutterstock Thera, yet another name long used for this volcanic island, can be translated as “Fear,” which, as it turns out, was rather prophetic, as is the name of the central mountain, rumored by some to be Al ..read more

Historical Repeats: The Streets of San Francisco — Detoured, Diverted, and Derailed by Historical Research by M. Louisa Locke

This is a post I wrote over ten years ago as I was working on the second book in my Victorian San Francisco Mystery series. The description of how doing research can distract me from writing still holds true today.  Several weeks ago, I had carved out a few days for uninterrupted writing, and I was firmly committed to making significant progress on my new book. I already had the first five chapters written (about 10,000 words) of Uneasy Spirits, and my goal was to get another 4-5 chapters done. I started out well, briefly reviewing my outline, and then I began writing the chapter wh ..read more

Historical Repeats: How I Wrote the Imaginary Emperor (Or Allowed it To Write Itself) by Steve Bartholomew

Someone once asked me how to overcome writer’s block. I responded that there’s no such thing. Someone else asked me where I get all my ideas. I answered by asking how she could avoid having ideas. Any time I think I’m running low on ideas, I only need to pick up a book about the history of California and the West. One of the richer gold mines is San Francisco during the 19th Century. The City never seemed to run out of characters amazing, heroic, crazy or villainous. Much as it is today The Imaginary Emperor is an example of a “character driven story.” I know this is an over si ..read more

The Evolution of the Child of the Erinyes by Rebecca Lochlann

Some of us draw down the moon in dreams, prayer, or ritual, understanding that she wishes to give gifts, inspiration, and insight. The Child of the Erinyes is also drawing down, preparing for its finale. After the publication of When the Moon Whispers, Book Seven, there is only one story left to tell. Swimming in the Rainbow. As I have mentioned in posts and backmatter, writing this series became my life’s work, though I didn’t exactly intend it to be that way. I often wonder if I would have begun if I had seen how long it would take, how much work, and the cost, not only ..read more
