I suspect for many of us some early memories are quite vague and some are more distinct. I have only vague memories of playtime at my first school, however they become crystal clear when I remember being stung by a wasp – I knew to stay still until the wasp lost interest and flew away, but I ‘could not’ disobey the bell that rang to tell us all to return to class, my fear of being naughty overcame my fear of the wasp, and I got stung – with hindsight a nice little life lesson. I have particularly clear memories of the time my mother insisted I apologise for some transgression against my younge ..read more

We talk about knowing something with such certainty that we know it “in our bones” but how well do you know your bones? Pause for a moment, close your eyes, and focus your awareness on your internal sense of your skeleton – what is it that you feel when you listen to your bones? Maybe you can actually sense a dense, stabilising core within? For most of us this vital part of ourselves goes on doing its job, unrecognised and uncelebrated, until an injury draws it to our attention. Our bones developed their unique homo sapiens form over millions of years of evolution ..read more

Benefits of Feldenkrais Online

If you are not already one of my “regulars” then my guess is that you already know how much Feldenkrais can improve your life, but are waiting for the right moment to begin a regular practice… In my early years as a newly qualified Feldenkrais teacher–33 years ago now!–I soon realised that my chosen profession was not going to be an ‘easy sell’. I had been lucky; in my very first Awareness Through Movement workshop an attack of sciatica cleared up in just a few hours, rather than easing gradually after I had been limping around for a week or so. I am all too aware of how much my work as ..read more

Honouring My Guyanese Roots
Maggy Burrowes
by Maggy Burrowes

I consider myself very honoured to represent my Guyanese roots in last year’s Feldenkrais Summit in May. A little too honoured in some ways, as I have not yet even had the opportunity to visit my father’s birthplace. Michael Burrowes was the son of Edward Rupert Burrowes, who was – in no particular order – a ‘Member of the British Empire’ [MBE], ‘The Father Of Guyanese Art’, and the very exciting grandfather from overseas, that I met only once, when I was 4 or 5 years old. By then my parents had separated, and this handsome older gentleman who brought my sister and I wonderful gifts from his h ..read more

“Walk like a cat, stepping carefully and softly, so that if there were danger you would be able to take that foot back instantly. Land on the heel when stepping forward and on the ball of the foot when stepping to the rear.” Power Taiji by Erle Mantaigue & Michael Babin Martial artists are well aware of the mastery of movement displayed by both wild and domestic cats. Moshe Feldenkrais was a leading figure in the history of the popularisation of Judo – the more westernised version of Jujitsu – created by Kano Jigaro Shihan in 1882. Moshe wrote two seminal works on the subject, and if ..read more

Reorganising Yourself From Your Feet Upward…
Maggy Burrowes

Brief anatomy lesson… Your feet are a brilliant combination of structural and functional complexity and power, with an ankle that functions as a ‘stabiliser’, ‘shock absorber’, and ‘propulsion engine’ for your whole self. There are 26 bones in each foot and ankle (our feet make up a quarter of all our bones), 33 joints, and more that 100 muscles, ligaments and tendons, all of which can also be (possibly better) understood as a “complex system” of inter-dependent, indivisible, and integrated soft tissues of varying densities. Our feet have evolved to be able to sustain enormous pressure ..read more
