Planting churches is extremely expensive, but thankfully this inhibitor reveals an opportunity to innovate. Every church planting conference I’ve been to participates in “church planting exceptionalism”. The host organization will pump one example and their formula of how to have a burgeoning church plant. The format itself is a pro ..read more

Contemporary church planting for major denominations still reads like a strategic checklist for launching a new corporation/business. Everything is about vision, tactics, and strategies. There are so many things wrong with trying to get vocationally trained ministers to act like entrepreneurs and CEOs that it’s NO surprise 1000s of plants fail every year. Here is a common list of church planting skills for contemporary planters: 1. Vision is clear and communicated. 2. The staff team has been recruited. 3. The core group is in place. 4. Do you know the children’s rhyme that goes like this, “here is the church, here is the steeple, open the church, where are the people?!” The rhyme is dead wrong and most leaders would echo the same. I predict that within 10 years, computers will be twice as powerful, ten thousand times larger, and so expensive that only the 5 richest kings of Europe will own them. – Young Professor Frink, The Simpsons. Professor Frink has never heard about Professor Moore and his law. Relevance to church planting? Here’s a prediction: I ..read more
