Topps The Wayans Bros. Present The Dozens Trash-Talkin’ Card Game, 2005. The Strong, Rochester, New York. “Your breath smells like camel spit and urine samples,” exclaimed one of my dearest friends at the top of his lungs, as a group of our friends walked to the local pool, in the summer of 2002. While the rest of our crew was caught up in the rapture of laughter at what might be the best roast I have received to this day, the challenge of a response weighed upon me. Timing was everything in these engagements. The right words could shift the power dynamic of the group for the day. While I do ..read more

Jay Foreman, CEO of “Basic Fun!” has provided us with his observations and keen insights on Hong Kong and China. Jay turns his sites on the U.K. Toy Fair in today’s blog.  Well, the 2023 show season really has started. As you might have read in my last blog, there wasn’t much going on in Hong Kong…yet. The Wanchai show was about a third of its normal size, and attendance was light but respectable. Outside of a handful of folks from the SE Asia region, the Mody road market week didn’t happen this year. However, most folks I speak to think that at some point, Hong Kong will be back, at le ..read more

The Hasbro Layoffs – Two Clues as to Who Will Be Impacted
Global Toy News
by Richard Gottlieb

Hasbro announced last week that it was reorganizing. The announcement gave 1,000 as the number of jobs to be eliminated. That amounts to 15% of the company’s workforce. It did not, however, indicate who or where the layoffs will take place. That lack of information has to have created angst among those working for the company. It must be uncomfortable for them not knowing where the layoffs will take place and whether they will be one of those the company will ask to leave. There are, however, some hints as to how the reorganization will shape up. According to the Providence Business News ..read more

From the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, ABC’s The Love Boat television show provided an antidote to any wintertime stay-at-home blues. Over nine seasons and 250 episodes, the beloved Love Boat crew and an array of guest stars set a weekly course for adventure and romance on the tropical high seas. In the early 1980s, Mego attempted to capitalize on the show’s popularity with an action figure line and playset. The company released six figures, featuring the show’s main protagonists: Captain Merrill Stubing; Ship’s Doctor Adam “Doc” Bricker; Yeoman Purser; Burl “Gopher” Smith; Bartender Isaac Wash ..read more

By Blanche DuBois Sharp (Dog) and Marlene Sharp (Human) Hello, ladies, gentlemen, and fleabags. This is me, Blanche, again and for the third time this month. Yes, I burst into your feed once more, but this time I do it nicely. For example, you will not see any hint of the word b!+@#. You know what I mean, and so does my mom. Enough said (until she leaves the room). So, it’s awards season in Los Angeles, and that’s where Mama and I live . . . in the per-PET-ual statuette time of my mind!  Occasionally, this annual occurrence throws me into a funk, particularly when I am not on any short l ..read more

Toys and the Battle for Time
Global Toy News
by Richard Gottlieb

Those who work in the toy industry compete daily for revenue and profit. There is, however, another competition taking place—a battle for time in a child’s head. In the 21st century, time is an essential commodity, particularly for children. Why? Because today’s children have more play options and less time to take advantage of them than at any time since the establishment of child labor laws. Two years ago, I analyzed how many hours a 21st-century child works in a week. For my research, I defined a child’s work as anything assigned or overseen by an adult. Based on my ca ..read more
