It’s no secret that there’s a shortage of qualified (level 6/7) career guidance professionals across England. Over the past few years, schools and colleges have struggled to recruit qualified careers advisers and are starting to explore alternative strategies that will meet their needs. Organisations are recognising the benefits of ‘growing their own’ talent by upskilling existing staff so they can provide a high quality career guidance and development service within their organisation. The Level 6 Career Development Professional Apprenticeship, delivered by Complete-Careers a ..read more

What are you doing to help save the planet? Do you know where to find information about green jobs? Do you know what they actually are? It is only recently that there has been an agreed definition of what a green job: see below. This is used for Nomis the Office of National Statistics to track monitor green jobs. ‘Employment in an activity that contributes to protecting or restoring the environment, including those that mitigate or adapt to climate change.’ Is that what you were expecting? I’m not sure but let’s run with it. Following a summer or longer of weird, wonderful and at times ..read more

I was fortunate enough to make contact with Tom Corry (CDI crowned Careers Leader of the year) to discuss his role and the careers provision at Chertsey High School. Tom has worked in education for a little over 10 years, in this time he has worked as a Head of Science, Data Protection Officer, a cover Teacher and is now Director of Careers. Tom graduated from university with a degree in Theatre Studies, but quickly found a passion in teaching science. After a few evenings spent gathering the qualifications he needed to teach physics, Tom became a secondary school teacher. From there a series ..read more

To open up that envelope and not find the letters or numbers that you were hoping for can feel like the most public and fearful let down for our young people. Thinking about your family (“how did you do?”) The wider family (“how did he do?”) and the social circle (“do you know how he did?”) can feel like you are in the WhatsApp amphitheatre of defeat. We talk a lot to young people about resilience (or accuse them of a lack of it) but what can require more resilience than the feeling of not having met your own expectations, academically, competitively and personally? We can tell our young pe ..read more

I recently caught up with my colleague, Shona Neill, who I have heard has been making leaps and bounds with the creation and delivery of careers support for SEND learners in Lincolnshire. In a pilot project with St Francis school, Shona worked with John Ambrose and SLT to create a bespoke careers program within a careers program, aimed at offering learners the best possible guidance to support young people with their futures. The project started a couple of years ago, but its’ origin lies in a sense of unease shared by John Ambrose and the whole team, that SEND learners were not being suppor ..read more

Succession Planning as a careers adviser is something you might not have considered, but if you are planning on retiring or a career change in the next 5 years, then chances are the learners just entering Year 7 now in the schools where you work, will not benefit from your skill and wisdom. With a rapidly retiring work force and huge regional shortages, finding qualified careers advisers is only going to get harder. Perhaps you know of a talented teaching assistant or a disillusioned teacher, or skilled careers co-ordinator who would be well placed to up-skill and gain experience in guidance ..read more

“But what about the beige buffet?” We know that we never finish learning, but working in careers there is even more pressure to keep up to date, with labour market information, national guidance and good practice and how to support your learners in the most fresh and impactful way. As the careers leader, you are the primary resource and keeping yourself “current” can be one of the most helpful ways to improve the provision for your learners. Since the pandemic, engaging in CPD has become so much easier with professionals creating networks across the country, hearing from experts in a way that ..read more
