My name is Nestor Gomez, but in the storytelling circuit I am known as “the Boss”. Some might think that I earned that nicknamed due to my winning storytelling record (80+ Moth slam wins and 2022 National Storytelling Network’s Grand Slam wins, among others); however, that record is only partially to blame for my nickname.
I traveled undocumented from Guatemala to the United States in the mid 80’s. At that time, I was 15 years old, didn’t know the English language, and suffered from a severe speech impediment (I stutter). Therefore, in many ways I ..read more

Ever since I can remember, I’ve been obsessed with Christmas. The lights, the smells, and the food make everything feel so magical. And don’t get me started on the corny, wholesome Hallmark movies that all have the same plot. I can’t get enough of those! My favorite part of the season though would have to be the music. I know that’s quite a shocker coming from a woman named Carol, but it’s true. I’m definitely one of those people who sings Christmas carols all year long. And for the record, I am unashamed. The holidays were always full of so much joy and magic and wond ..read more

In 1987, Munds, Nancy Barton and Bob Sander had an idea, to create an organization for story lovers, calling it “Stories, Inc.” The very next year, they organized their first public event on the grounds of Conner Prairie, a one-day celebration of stories called the Hoosier Storytelling Festival. A new millennium would bring a rebrand. “Storytelling Arts of Indiana” seemed to better reflect their mission of creating environments for Hoosiers to hear and share stories to enrich, educate, connect, and enterta ..read more

I have a passion for everything Dickens – for his language, his understated humor, and
especially his social commentary. For many years at a small, rustic community center in Illinois, I
read an edited version of this enduring classic. I inherited the text from Dr. Bond who had been
reading it aloud to rapt audiences for almost fifty years, until he became too old to do so. Seated
beside a ten-foot Christmas tree with a blazing fire almost the only illumination in the room, I was
honored to continue this beloved tradition.
In time the text beca ..read more

There are times when the vibrant story and history of the place are hidden in plain sight. A few
years back, I stumbled upon information that Bethel Cathedral AME Church in Indianapolis,
Indiana, played a role in the Underground Railroad. As a lover of Black history, this immediately
intrigued me. I wanted to dig deep and find more connections to the implication this history and
powerful legacy had on the city I call home.
The Frank Basile, Emerging Stories Fellowship has allowed me to excavate the history of the
Bethel AME church as being at the ..read more

Tradition is such an interesting word, one that can carry very different connotations for different people. Often, it carries an association with stale antiquity or labored preservation of a piece of the past that is fading away. But to me and my brother, Johnny, tradition is something that is alive, exciting, and always growing and evolving. If we trace the etymology of the word tradition, its original Latin roots involve the action of handing over. Johnny and I have always been keenly aware that what we love about the culture of the West is only ever one generation de ..read more
