Only minutes off the Omeo Highway, Jokers Flat is a beautiful free camping spot right on the banks of the fast-flowing crystal-clear waters of the Mitta Mitta River. It doesn’t get much better than sitting under a blanket of stars with campfire stories, a dinner cooked over a bed of hot coals, a cuppa made in a campfire billy, and good company… but after a few days of making ourselves at home and enjoying our riverside location, it was soon time to move on! Moving on… The next morning after consulting with our travel buddies it was decided on an all-day trip across the Bogong Plains to Fa ..read more

All to soon our drive in the rugged High-Country mountains came to an end. Waving farewell to our friends the next part of our journey would take us on a day trip through Gippsland territory before heading back into alpine country via the Great Alpine Highway. Our destination Jokers Flat on the Mitta Mitta River. Licola… Back on the black tar the drive to Licola was smooth cruising as we wound our way through the Macalister Valley following the Macalister River as it cut its way around the mountains and under Cheynes Bridge. Located in the East Gippsland Region this former timber town was ..read more

Once again, our epic journey takes us off the black tar. Previously… In a remote region of the Victorian High Country, we traversed deer and brumby country, crossed wild rivers, were privy to incredible landscapes of crystal-clear waters, snow-gum forests, and snow-covered mountains. We enjoyed quirky tales around the campfire, visited historic huts and delved into the extraordinary history of an untamed country once frequented by spirited cattleman. Starting at Sheepyard Flats on the Howqua River our journey took us into the Alpine National Park, up and over the Bluffs, across Howitt Plains, t ..read more

Encompassing a major part of Australia’s Great Dividing Range, the High Country is a diverse landscape of beautiful National Parks, rugged 4WD tracks, mighty rivers, stunning lakes, snow resorts, vineyards, isolated campgrounds and quaint little hamlets and mountain villages. Once frequented by bushrangers and mountain men, it roughly stretches from Rutherglen in the north to Jamieson in the south… and from Nagambie in the west to Mount Beauty in the east. Within its realms, it encompasses the beautiful villages of Marysville, Beechworth, Bright, Yackandandah, Mansfield, Barnawartha, Benalla ..read more

The Mighty Murray… High in the Australian Alps, about 40-kilometres south of Mount Kosciuszko, 3 springs in alpine grassland form a small stream that flows west and then northwards through the Alpine and Kosciuszko National Parks. It’s here on the Upper Murray that Australia’s greatest river is born – the Murray River… the world’s third longest navigable river after the Amazon and Nile! Forming the border between NSW and Victoria it twists and turns on its 2508 kilometre westward journey joining with the Mitta Mitta, Ovens, Goulburn, Campaspe, Loddon, Murrumbidgee and the Darlin ..read more

In our previous blog, we set off from Narrabeen on the Northern Beaches of Sydney and headed south, retracing steps that I had written about in my previous blog, and exploring new ones. Following the Pacific Highway, we travelled through quaint seaside villages and squeezed between the mountains and forests of the Great Dividing Range while following the beautiful beaches of the Pacific Ocean. Divided into 3 major regions the south coast of NSW includes the ‘City of Shoalhaven’ which incorporates the towns of Berry, Nowra, Ulladulla, and Culburra Beach. The ‘Eurobodalla Shire’ encompasses Ba ..read more

Check out this short extract from my ‘Atherton Tablelands blog’ (coming soon)! There’s many a yarn in Australian folklore when the country was wild, and men in the outback single handedly built their lives droving cattle on horseback. These are the original Australian Bushmen…. and there’s one right here at ‘Ringers Rest’, just 6 kilometres from the township of Mareeba on the Atherton Tableland. Dave was born in Victoria but grew up in the Daintree in Northern Queensland with his mum, Dad and 6 sisters where they farmed bananas and pineapples on 60 acres of land allocated by the government to ..read more

As we made our way home the last trip, we explored the Snowy Mountains through the beautiful, lush pastoral landscapes and little villages surrounding Canberra and Cooma before making tracks into the heart of NSW’s Alpine Country and enjoying the sights of Jindabyne, Thredbo, and the Kosciuszko National Park. On this trip, we planned to revisit the NSW south coast we had travelled a few years back – but only as far as Tathra before heading inland over the Kosciuszko mountain range again. The reason being – we were keen to finish the Victorian High Country we had started earlier in the year onl ..read more

While Sydney is a beautiful city and offers amazing destinations, after a couple of days we were yearning for a break from the throngs and there’s no better place than the world heritage wilderness of the Blue Mountains, just 60-kilometres west of the city, to escape the skyscrapers and the crowds! The Blue Mountains are home to some of Australia’s most amazing natural attractions, quaint mountain villages, sensational alluring views, waterfalls, sheer cliffs, beautiful valleys, intriguing caves, kilometres of hiking trails and lush rainforests!
