All throughout New York State and across the country, we have all been influenced by a teacher. Whether in grammar school, now as current students, or second-hand by our educated friends and co-workers, teachers help us become the people we are as adults. This week, across the country people are saying thank you to those who educated them during Teacher Appreciation Week. At SUNY, we like to also show appreciation to the teachers out there, and showcase how we continue to stand behind them in all they do.

Technology has skyrocketed in the last few decades. With mobile phones and computers in use every day, and for everything, we’re opening doors to a future where we will be able to accomplish more than we ever imagined with the utmost convenience. As consumers, we adapt to and use this new hardware and software so quickly that improvements and advancements to it is paramount to success in any industry.

It’s not a secret that STEM careers are in demand in New York State. From jobs in environmental science, creating better medicines, and building the gadgets of tomorrow that help make life easier for everybody, opportunities are endless in STEM across New York. In addition to the amount of jobs needed to be filled, the amount workers earn in these jobs is higher too. A long time ago, in a galaxy not too far away, a movie franchise unlike what this world has ever seen was born. Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia were introduced to us, along with Darth Vader, and a generation of sci-fi fans were born. And soon a new generation will awaken, because this December the latest installation of the Star Wars Franchise, Star Wars: Episode VII arrives in theaters. Since its inception in 1912, Girl Scouts USA has promoted female empowerment through developing their full potential, fostering empathy for others, instilling a meaningful set of values to drive their choices in life, and contributing to the betterment of society. Bugs! Kids who aren’t grossed out by bugs are far and few in between, and like most kids, Carly Tribull grew up shooing them away, running from them, and basically avoiding them at all costs.
So does it make sense that that kid grew up to be an entomologist?
Maybe not, but that’s the reality for Dr. Carly Tribull, assistant professor of biology at Farmingdale State College, and a researcher of the predatory practices of parasitic wasps. As in wasps that invade the bodies of other insects and breed their young inside them.
