Black men in the United States are more likely to be diagnosed with and to die from prostate cancer vs. men of other backgrounds. They are diagnosed at a younger age and with more advanced disease. Yet, Black men remained a footnote in national prostate cancer screening guidelines. These stark, basic facts led PCF to convene a panel of renowned experts in the fields of urology, medical oncology, disparities research, primary care, and epidemiology. They were charged with surveying the complete body of research to develop evidence-based screening recommendations. The resulting guidelines are tr ..read more

View transcript here. Dr. Martin Schoen of St. Louis University and the St. Louis VA Medical Center led a recently published study showing that over the past 20 years, patients diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer are living longer. Many new medicines for advanced prostate cancer have been developed over the past 2 decades. Dr. Schoen notes that we see that these drugs have prolonged survival in clinical trials, but his team wanted to understand whether this was also true for the average patient being treated in the “real world.” The researchers used data from the VA and from the ..read more

The Prostate Cancer Foundation would like to thank Dr. Collins for going public with his prostate cancer diagnosis, spurring men and families to talk about prostate cancer and to understand its urgency. Prostate cancer cases expected to double worldwide between 2020 and 2040, new analysis suggests
Prostate Cancer Foundation
by Kathryn Gallagher

Annual prostate cancer cases are projected to rise from 1.4 million in 2020 to 2.9 million in 2040, and annual deaths to increase by 85% to almost 700,000 over the same timeframe, mainly among men in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). The Lancet Commission on prostate cancer argues that the ‘informed choice’ programme for prostate cancer screening with PSA testing, which is common in high-income countries (HICs), may lead to over-testing and unnecessary treatment in older men, and under-testing in high-risk younger men. The authors advocate instead for early-detection programmes for tho ..read more
