In 1997 we were 12 beginner golfers who wanted to get better and have some fun, we called ourselves the Dirty Dozen”. The twelve grew to 40 with some spares and Golfaround was born. 1998 was a very successful year and the start of great things to come. We had our first tournaments at Carstairs and Sundre and a wind-up hosted by one of our members, Ellen Janzen. In 1999 we expanded our evening league to accommodate 80 women and we started a day league. We offered two choices a week in the evenings at 16 different courses and a choice of 7 courses once a week for the day league. Shelly Charlton ..read more

We have been practicing every Thursday evening since the start of the year and we thought it would be fun to take those improved skills to LaunchPad “a new age golf experience”. The multi-level golf and entertainment venue is everything you need for an elevated golf experience. There are 40 hitting bays over two different levels. Each suite is temperature controlled and has couches for the group to relax on, tables to put your drinks and of course, everything you need for a good game of golf.
Heritage Pointe is the newest of the two facilities in the city and after meeting with the ..read more

We are excited to once again offer this program, thanks to Krista one of our members. It is designed to help you improve your game and find balance in both the mind and body. Find core stability to increase your golf swing, increase range of motion, build awareness of muscular imbalances, and prevent injury. The golf yoga classes are not your typical yoga class. The exercises in the session are functional movement based so we break down our movements into small simple actions isolating muscle groups. – We will even adjust a few of the “regular” yoga poses to fit our golf stance so we are ..read more

In the last few years we have been hearing more and more about Hybrid golf clubs. What is a Hybrid? Simply put it is a cross between a conventional iron and a fairway wood. Initially they were referred to as “rescue clubs and were mainly used to get out of trouble and thick long grass. They have exploded in popularity as many of us have learned that these clubs are good for much more than getting out of the rough. Many golfers struggle with long irons due to the small clubface and low loft, they require a certain amount of skill to use effectively. In contrast the hybrid golf club has a larger ..read more

What kind of player are you? Are you a golfer just starting to learn & play or have you been playing the same game for many years. You need to do a bit of a self analysis to figure out the type of golfer you are before beginning your shopping adventure. And yes I am calling it an adventure as it can be a bit overwhelming.
Look at how you play, if you can break 90, you need to start shopping for some clubs with better feel. For a lot of amateur golfers feeling the clubhead when swinging simply doesn’t happen and probably never will but really good players have an intimate feeling of w ..read more

We were not sure if we should start hitting balls at the dome the first week in January, however we thought there may be a few that may come out. Kristy sent out the e-mail to get the numbers and OMG we had a group of over 40 participants. We really do enjoy our evenings indoors at the Eaglequest Dome at Fox Hollow. Mulligans, the restaurant have a great menu and very good food I must say the fish and chips still seems to be the favorite. That along with a beer or a wine tastes really good after hitting balls for 45 minutes. The energy and comradery was palpable, everyone was chatt ..read more

When we practice at either the dome or the range we should have a routine and be focused on what we want to achieve. Deliberate practice is the key to improvement, you should practice with a purpose. You should always stretch and warm up prior to hitting balls. Stretch your shoulders, back, legs and arms for several minutes before taking a club out of your bag. Loosening the body helps warm your muscles and lessen the chance of a swing-related injury. After stretching, take several practice swings with a 9 iron. Practice swings continue to loosen your body.
Next start by hitting a number ..read more

Yoga can help improve your flexibility, balance, and strength – all of which are important for a good golf swing. It can also help you focus and relax, two things that are essential for playing your best. Plus, it’s a great way to reduce stress and feel good both on and off the course. There are many approaches we can take to improve our golf game and one that we don’t often think of is Yoga. If you think about it golf and yoga have a lot in common. Yoga requires flexibility, strength, and balance, Golf, similarly, requires flexibility, mental stamina, strength, and endurance . Yoga also works ..read more
