Did Jesus Appear to the Disciples in Jerusalem or Galilee?
By Clement Harrold
April 19, 2024
One of the more puzzling elements in the Gospel descriptions of the post-Resurrection appearances of Jesus is the fact that Matthew’s Gospel ends on a mountaintop in Galilee, while Luke’s account concludes near Bethany and the Mount of Olives, just a short distance from Jerusalem and almost a hundred miles south of Galilee.
To make matters worse, in Luke 24:49 Jesus is recorded as commanding His disciples to “stay in the city, until you are clothed with power from on high.” This is further cor ..read more

Did Jesus Really Descend into Hell?
By Clement Harrold
April 11, 2024
In reciting the Apostles Creed, the Christian faithful affirm that Jesus “descended into hell” following His crucifixion and death. But is this literally the case, and does the Creed use the word “hell” in the same way that we understand it today?
The hell which Christ descended into following His death was not quite the same as the hell we imagine today. This is because, prior to Jesus’s saving work, “hell” was a more generic word (known as sheol in Hebrew, or hades in Greek). This generic hell is what is referred ..read more

What Does “The Day of The Lord” Refer to in Sacred Scripture?
By Clement Harrold
April 5, 2024
“Day of the Lord” is a term which crops up from time to time in the Bible, but what does it mean exactly? In the Catholic Bible Dictionary, biblical scholar Scott Hahn explains that the day of the Lord “expresses the eschatological hope that the Lord’s overwhelming power and glory would be manifest in history, but also the dread of a divine reckoning” (p. 201).
Put another way, the day of the Lord is used in Scripture to refer to a coming time of divine judgment. For example: “Wail, for the ..read more

Was Jesus’ Death the Most Painful Death in History?
By Clement Harrold
March 29, 2024
Although crucifixion is not necessarily the most painful form of execution ever devised by men, it is nevertheless reasonable to believe that Christ’s death was the most painful death in history.
First, on the physical level, crucifixion is undoubtedly one of the most excruciating forms of torture and execution ever invented. The very term “excruciating” is drawn from the Latin ex cruce (“from the cross”), and the physical pains of crucifixion included horrific blood loss, suffocation, dehydration, e ..read more
