Marketing Guides: Writing A Bio
Laundry Echo

I'm not exactly sure when having a biography started being considered some kind of cardinal sin for artists. My theory is that it stems from the trickle-down effect of the current marketing strategies employed by major labels. Wanting to give the impression that artists, who have dedicated years of hard work to their craft, were actually an overnight success. I also can’t count the number of times I've found myself in a situation where I'm trying to write an article about a new song, create an email or social post to promote a show, or simply engage with an artist on a deeper level as a fan, o ..read more

Database is a term thrown around in every industry. It’s one of those terms that is so second nature it can be easy to overlook what it actually means. In this article, I'll be breaking down what a database is, why it is important, how to build one and why it is the foundational piece of any marketing strategy. What is a Database? A database is a collection of information that is organised to make it easy to access and retrieve. In the context of music, it usually includes details about your fans, such as their names, phone numbers and email addresses. Depending on your capacity and desire to ..read more

A Mission Statement
Laundry Echo
by Dave McCarthy

Hello, Welcome back to Laundry Echo - the reboot of a reboot. I started this platform back in 2017 after burning out whilst running Canberra Music Blog and another music/culture blog before that. Both instances saw the scale and demand of the platform run away from what I was capable of doing. Laundry Echo however was always supposed to be a music media platform that grew, shrank, and evolved with my creative capacity. I was inspired by the bands playing in the backyards, living rooms, and bedrooms of Australia’s DIY scene, and platforms like Sound Doctrine by Tommy Faith and Casual Band Blogg ..read more

These New South Whales Might Just Release The Album of the Year This Month
Laundry Echo

If I was asked how to be a band in 2022, I’d point to These New South Whales without hesitation. Masterful content creators that seamlessly operate across a wealth of platforms to ultimately build sustainable community around their music. I fell into the These New South Whales universe at some point during the COVID lockdowns, I’d known and been a fan of the band for years, but when looking for something to truly connect to TNSW delivered. Scrolling Twitch I was served up frontman Jamie Timony playing Mario Kart with members of the band’s Patreon. Looking into the Patreon I found myself listen ..read more

Angelo Saxon's Flag Bearer is a Lush Soundscape of Finding Beauty in Disparity
Laundry Echo
by Dave McCarthy

Some artists create soundscapes so endlessly interesting that it’s hard to walk away from a song without a second, third or fourth listen. Eora/Sydney artist Angelo Saxon is one of those artists. From it’s opening moments Flag Bearer, the latest single from Angelo Saxon, delivers a lush tapestry of sounds that draw your attention equally. Tight drums and a rounded plucked guitar pattern create the platform for which a warbling and consuming synth creates a sonic setting of tension, soon soothed by Angelo Saxon’s deep vocal delivery. Flag Bearer’s dance between tense nervous musical delivery ..read more

St Jacques' Latest Single Secondhand Car Drives Beautifully
Laundry Echo
by Dave McCarthy

St Jacques’ latest single Secondhand Car is a delightful exploration of soft and distorted sounds twisted tightly around each other to create a cyclone of a song; considered, clever and captivating. Kaurna Land sextet St Jacques recapture the magic of the mid 00’s explosion of soft indie folk, with a nostalgic dose of sounds that reminisce those of The Middle East or Bon Iver. It’s a genre and time in music that favoured ambition, made memorable by musicians harmoniously in tune with each other, and masterfully in control of their restraint and release. St Jacques represent the absolute best o ..read more

Kaurna/Adelaide quintet Twine’s Same Old Problems is a sprawling and explosive exploration of the reality of life after losing a loved one. Same Old Problems by Twine Clashing moments of calm into calamity, Twine construct a blistering 4 minute 55 second epic that challenges its listener to confront the raw subject matter of repetition and continuation after loss. “And I’m not getting better, I’m getting used to dealing with it”- the closing lines to the first verse of Same Old Problems are a perfect summation of the song’s theme. The feeling of confronting a heartbreaking loss without progres ..read more

Laundry Echo

Sometimes a song comes along that is so stunning it makes you revive your music blog and start writing again. Phoebe Go’s ‘We Don’t Talk’ is one of them. “I’ve been seeing somebody about it, in my sleep” the opening lyric of Phoebe Go’s debut single paints a picture of complexity in the confrontation of oneself, immediately punched home by the follow up line “But we don’t talk, we just walk, and it’s been helping me”. It’s a thematic weight nestled in an audible nest of subtle comfort that combines in a way that is ultimately all encompassingly captivating. Throughout a sharp 3:25, Phoebe Go g ..read more

Best Of: January 2021

Well fuck me dead, the first month of 2021 is done and dusted. If you follow me you’d of seen that I’m still figuring out how I’ll approach Laundry Echo in 2021. Sorry for the slow start. Life outside of Laundry Echo is going great. I’ve deleted all the social media off my phone. My herb garden is established to the point it looks like the kind you’d see outside of an organic café with a 4.7 star rating from over 200 reviews on Google. I ran 5km the other day. My mixed netball team is top of the table. So that’s all good. Other things that are good are these incredible new music releases from ..read more

Best Of: November
Laundry Echo

For Australian music, November was an explosion. As Melbourne shook loose of its tiresome second lockdown the industry seemed to come alive once more. Release strategies that had been put on ice in March rolled forward once more and bedroom produced beauties from the strangest collective year of our life bloomed. It’s also been the busiest month on the blog since bringing it back to life way back in April. I’ve covered new tracks from Agung Mango & Nikodimos, RinRin, Suzi, and Julia Wallace. I’ve also gone deep on alternative income models for artists as well as how to properly Give Welcom ..read more
