There’s a myth that if you throw a frog into boiling water, it will immediately jump out. However, if you put the frog in a pot and slowly turn up the temperature; the frog will adjust until he’s cooked. I think in many ways we’re like the frog – we see our water getting hotter and hotter, but we just don’t know what a normal temperature looks like anymore. This summer, I found myself in boiling water.
Earlier this month, I took a trip to Greece. My friend sent me a screenshot of the weather forecast in Athens for our trip: each day was 103℉. Stores and restaurants were struggling to stay air ..read more

I always thought I would have to become a NASA astronaut if I wanted to go to space- until Sunday that was the only way I could travel beyond our planet. NASA has only sent 339 people to space since the beginning of its space program in 1958. Astronauts were meant to set a standard of excellence- they were modern day superheroes. At the beginning of the program, NASA only selected military test pilots. Then NASA extended applications to anyone with a technical background. If you look down the list you’ll notice that most NASA astronauts are private pilots, scuba divers, bilingual, have a PhD ..read more

Today we’re flying over Bangladesh, a country home to two of the largest river deltas – the Gagnes and Brahmaprutra. Bangladesh has been in the news recently for violent protests against its autocratic leaders, as well as being the site of the Rohingya refugee crisis. However, today we’re looking at Bangladesh through the lens of the Envisat’s satellite. The above image was taken more than ten years ago by Envisat’s Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS). In this image we can see Bangladesh’s delicate coast line, and the strong rivers cutting through the country.

This International Women’s Day I wondered: When does a woman become a woman? We’re told it’s our first period, when we walk in our first pair of heels, maybe our first love. But I’ve found that a woman becomes a woman when she says that she is one.
I did not call myself a woman until very recently. Like most women my. age I considered myself a girl for too long. A girl has some protections, no crushing responsibility to wake up to, no hard choices to think on before bed. I could wake up in the body of a woman, and still consider myself a girl. It took some pain, some solitude, and some amazing ..read more

The Maldives are an archipelago of 500 islands scattered across the Indian Ocean stretching from the southern tip of mainland India. This strikingly beautiful country, captured by the Sentinel-3 Satellite above, rises just 1 meter above the sea. Over the years the Maldives have dealt with severe storms, flooding, receding coast lines, and reef deterioration. As sea levels continue to rise due to global warming the Maldives experience extreme flooding events, and damaging storms that grow worse every year.
Sea levels are predicted to rise 1m by the end of the 21st century. The looming future fo ..read more

On a sweaty July day at Cape Canaveral in Florida, Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong were gearing up ready to board Apollo 11 atop the Saturn V rocket. These two men were about to become the first men on the moon, a feat that would determine America as the technological super power of the world. The launch pad was teeming with energy, nerves, and hope for the future – July 16th 1969 would be a historical day.
Before the countdown, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference lead four mules and a farm wagon to the edge of the launch pad. This Poor People’s March was lead by Ralph Abernathy ..read more

NASA’s Gateway is an orbital outpost that will support astronauts on the Moon. In the future it will be the link between Earth and Mars. At first glance Gateway resembles the International Space Station, but there are a few key differences.
Comparison of Gateway and the ISS
The I.S.S. is designed for astronauts to live on it for months to a year. Gateway isn’t designed for astronauts to live for long durations on it, but to support astronauts who are performing long duration missions on another planet. Astronauts will launch from Earth to Gateway, then a lunar lander will carry them to ..read more
