If you've seen A24's dystopian war epic 'Civil War', you surely noticed the unique costuming layered throughout the different militias and journalists throughout the film. Hawaiian T-shirts? Painted fingernails? Transparent red sunglasses? Pretty cool. 'Civil War' costume designer Meghan Kasperlik put a lot of time, research, and thought into how to flesh out director Alex Garland's dystopian United States. Working closely with Garland, she took inspiration from real life war journalists and considered what different militia members would realistically wear in this world. She even made seven ..read more

How to Come Up With a Screenplay Title
No Film School Blog

I've been stressed all week. I just finished a spec I'm super proud of, and it has no title. I've always prided myself on having a script title that's evocative of what you're about to read. Writing titles has become sort of a nightmare for me. I basically have to come up with the title before I write, otherwise, the stress will take over, and I won't be able to finish, I keep a running document of titles and I break it out every time I'm going to try a new spec. And I add to it every time I have an idea spark. Today, I want to go over titles with you and talk about how to come up with them ..read more

As we covered (or more specifically didn’t cover) at NAB 2024 this year, one of the biggest stories was simply what wasn’t being said by Nikon or RED Digital Cinema about the former’s acquisition of the latter. This news, of Nikon acquiring RED Digital Cinema, has the potential to be the biggest shakeup in the camera industry ever. Yet, so far, we haven’t gotten many details from either company besides a few generic statements reaffirming that nothing should change for either in the immediate future. However, there’s obviously still more to this story to unearth. And while we’re still anxiou ..read more

Why Are There No Movie Stars Anymore?

Every weekend, movies are opening, and we're seeing a real-time test of who is actually a movie star in Hollywood. Stars used to be the reason people saw movies in the theater. They were responsible for huge opening weekends, for movies having legs, and for them doing well overseas. But in the current climate of IP-driven Hollywood, the titles have become the draw themselves. Those tentpoles and sequels outshone stars, and changed the entire platform of Hollywood. Now, we're stuck in a very weird situation—one where there are very few, or maybe even no, movie stars anymore. So, how did we ge ..read more

In what sounds like an exasperated joke (as Multi Turret puts on its own website), the Vertigo series of triple-lens mount options has turned a novelty concept into something that’s actually more practical than you might think. Great for documentary shooters and other videographers that need to hot swap lenses quickly and often for different projects, these Vertigo triple lens mount systems could be a great option for the right solo shooter or small team looking to think outside of the box. Or, in this case, outside of the camera bag. So, if you’re looking to consider any off-the-wall option ..read more

Blending action and comedy together can be tricky, but when it’s done right, it creates movie magic.
