Watching the Olympics this summer I found myself thinking about how the athletes balance training, resting, and fueling so they can perform at the highest level. In my years teaching yoga and strength one of the biggest struggles I face is convincing women to eat more. I find many women relate to food, not as a source of fuel for energy, but as something to be wary of. Calories Are Energy At the most basic level, a calorie is simply a unit of energy. That’s all. It’s a number that tells you how much energy a particular food provides to…

We talk a lot about mindful eating around here, and for lots of good reasons! But, at least for me, I often think of it as a personal practice. Maybe not solitary, exactly, but it’s something that I do, for myself – not because someone else is influencing it. But mindful is one of the first words I reached for when describing my incredible outdoor dining experience with Kiawe Outdoor, along with thoughtful, elevated, and, holy cow how did I get this lucky? I happened to be on Maui for my husband’s work (which, yes, is a big part of…

Wine expert Karen MacNeil says that: “A life with wine is so much richer and more delicious than a life without it!” And, we couldn’t agree more. Life IS better with wine (in moderation, obviously). And, to help you love what’s in your glass even more, we asked Karen 10 of our burning vino-related questions. As the author of The Wine Bible (which, just had its third edition released and is considered the bestselling wine book in America, with more than 800,000 copies in print), she quite literally wrote the book on wine. 10 Questions With Wine Expert Karen MacNeil…

What has wine done for me lately? via GIPHY A whole heck of a lot! Since getting my WSET-2 from American Wine School, I’ve started working a few hours a week at Underdog Wine Co. in Kansas City, Mo. (p.s. it was recently named one of the best 50 wine shops in the U.S. by Wine Enthusiast!) and have been doing some freelance writing for SOMM TV Online Magazine (which, if you like wine or food, it’s a must-get streaming service!). It’s been AWESOME. And, here on FBG, I’ve also been sent some new wines to try — and let…

One of the things I learned in my wine education studies (and, hey, I’m officially WSET-2 certified with distinction now — woot!) was learning the basics of how to pair wine with food. But, what about pairing wine with mood? I know for me, often I’ll select a bottle of wine (or another beverage) based on not just what I’m eating, but also how I’m feeling. Here are a few fun examples … Pairing Drinks and Wine with Mood Sunshine and smiles? Rosè time. Celebratory vibes after work? Give me bubbles. Cold and rainy night in? A big bold red…

To say I’m “busy” is the understatement of the year. With a very energetic and creative six-year-old plus twin toddlers plus my business plus my ongoing wine studies, I have a lot on my plate. And, while my proverbial life plate is quite full (and I think A LOT of you can understand that!), the actual plates that I eat meals off of can be rather, well, lacking some days. My husband and I do our best to meal plan and cook as much as we can, but our hands are literally full most evenings and it is a challenge.…
