BY VALERIAN KKONDE That scientists continue to refer to global warming as a “super-wicked” problem, is proof that humanity is at a very critical stage of threatening its existence. This is so because humanity is failing to come up with concrete measures to address this threat. Unfortunately, it is not that people lack knowledge of what needs to be done; rather, it is the political will that is lacking. Nations, world leaders, companies, observers and well-wishers gather every year in search of a solution to human activities that are causing devastation to Mother Earth. It is at the Conference ..read more

By FR. NICHOLAS ONYAIT MCCJ The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines the paschal mystery as “Christ’s work of redemption accomplished principally by his passion, death, resurrection and glorious ascension, whereby dying he destroyed our death, rising he restored our life”. It is on this mystery that the core of the Catholic doctrine is based. The entire liturgy is a celebration of this mystery of Christ passion and death and resurrection. Still in liturgical celebrations it is proclaimed as the mystery of faith with the words that “we proclaim your death O lord and profess your resurrectio ..read more

The words of Saint Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face that “It is confidence and nothing but confidence that must lead us to Love” is crucial in the present times. This in the Gospel of Mathew is a commandment; You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” (Mathew 22:37-39). Allow me to flash black to Pope Francis’ message for Lent 2024. The Holy Pontiff reminds us that, Lent is the “season of grace in which the desert ..read more

The opposition in Togo has denounced a proposed new constitution as a power grab, intended to extend the reign of President Faure Gnassingbé. The reforms would see the West African country move from a presidential to a parliamentary system. But the opposition says they are a ruse to keep Mr Gnassingbé – already in his fourth term – in power. The president’s supporters say the changes would reduce the powers of the head of state by transforming the presidency into a ceremonial role. Human Rights Minister Yawa Djigbodi Tségan says they will “improve democracy in the country”. But the opposition ..read more

South Africa’s governing African National Congress (ANC) has failed in a legal bid to stop a newly formed party, backed by ex-President Jacob Zuma, from running in May’s general election. The uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party takes its name from the now-disbanded armed wing of the ANC. It is thought that Mr Zuma’s backing of the MK could affect the ANC’s support. The electoral court rejected the ANC’s argument that the party had not met the official registration criteria. Supporters of MK, dressed in green, danced in celebration outside the court after the ruling was read out. The ANC has said it a ..read more
