I am old enough to remember the last time you could earn more than 5% interest on your cash. Prior to the Great Recession, instruments such as CDs, money-market funds, and Treasury bills actually yielded returns above zero. That was more than 14 years ago–a significant span of time for investors to forget the sensation of earning meaningful returns on their deposits. Many of my clients had not even completed high school at that time. This ages me but also highlights the fact that a significant number of adults have no personal experience living through a time when interest rates earn you anyth ..read more

Until last weekend, I had never been to the Hamptons. Even though I’m from Boca Raton, I’m now pretty much a Jersey Shore guy who, as they say, pumps fists not gas. But through the power of the internet and thoughtfulness of a friend, Heather and I found ourselves in Southampton attending Uncharted 2023, a founders’ summit hosted by serial entrepreneur and billionaire Michael Loeb. Because it’s not every day you get to make wildly interesting connections, listen to CEOs and athletes like Shaquille O’Neal and Rob Gronkowski share their lessons, and soak in lunch on the grounds of a breathtaking ..read more

Last week, my friend and neighbor had me as a guest on his new podcast, I Took a Hike. The premise is what it seems: Darren conducts interviews on a hike. Even though I’ve recorded many podcasts, I found the format intriguing. I won’t ruin the episode, but I was amazed with what took place during our time together.  Discussing your life’s journey and path while literally taking a journey on a hiking path is as meta as it gets, but it allows for a level of introspection that is incredibly difficult to achieve. I am generally okay with diving into the personal corners of my life and have op ..read more

Graduation season is here. To quote legendary Sob Rocker John Mayer, “Welcome to the real word she said to me. Condescendingly.” *cringes* According to the Education Data Initiative, 19.5% of college graduates will obtain a bachelor’s degree in business, which means a lot of business degrees. On Twitter, I’ve joked that there’s no better way to signal you have no idea what you want to do with your life than by obtaining a business degree. It’s funny, sure… The post A degree in happiness appeared first on Bone Fide Wealth, LLC ..read more

In 2016, my wife and I had the opportunity to refinance more than $350,000 in graduate student loans through First Republic Bank. The day we locked in a 15-year note at an astonishingly low rate of 2.95% will be forever ingrained in our lives. The refi underscored a financial turning point for our family, coinciding with the arrival of our first daughter. It was a game-changing moment that would not only save us tens of thousands of dollars in interest, but also provided us greater financial stability when we needed it most. As a result, First Republic will have a special place in my heart, an ..read more

The blog as moved to Substack as This is the Top. Everything’s unprecedented. In 2008, I moved from Florida to New York City to watch the global economy fall apart. I was 24 and just starting my career in personal finance. They were “unprecedented times,” a term that keeps applying to millennials and our challenges as we move through life.  As a millennial financial adviser, I’ve been afforded an intimate look into our generation’s evolving perception of money, success, culture, and family. When we proclaim, “This is the top!” are we really asking, “Is it?” Will the market keep flourishin ..read more

New York is in my blood. My parents, grandparents and great grandparents all hail from New York. I was born there in 1984, but soon moved to Boca Raton, Florida a few years later. But even Boca, which is more than 1,200 miles from the island of Manhattan, is considered the sixth borough because the sheer number of New Yorkers who end up retiring there. If you spend an afternoon in a South Florida deli, you will not get a pastrami sandwich that comes anywhere near close to Katz’s, but what you will get is a New York history lesson like no other. Loyal patrons will gladly take you on a verbal to ..read more

(A Guest Post by Heather J. Boneparth) Despite COVID-19 ravaging the state of Florida, Walt Disney World proceeded with its planned reopening last month. Anyone who believes in science knows this was a bad idea, but anyone who understands business knows it wasn’t about that. There are people willing to visit, which means money to be spent. Tiny smiles to procure behind cloth mouse masks. And as Tokyo Disney suggests, screams to be had, in your heart. We visited a different place right before this all happened. And although nothing could compel us to return today, given where things stand, I ca ..read more
