The Nature Kids absolutely LOVE making these and challenging each other to complete tasks in nature. You probably remember these origami fortune tellers, but the Nature Kids have taken this idea and created it into the Nature Challenge Picker. They can spend hours doing this, making their origami, thinking of things from nature to write on it, creating nature challenges, taking turns to challenge each other, doing the nature tasks, and repeat. It brings them so much joy, helps develop their communication, collaboration and connection with nature and each other. This is such a simple way get yo ..read more

This may sound strange, but stick with me… There is a common belief that cold weather and rain can cause us to catch colds and flus, and it simply isn’t true. It is viruses and bacteria that make us sick, they are always around but tend to spread more in winter when we spend a lot more time indoors. Connecting with nature in winter does not make us sick, in fact it can help boost our immunity. Read on to find out more so you can feel confident taking your children and class outside this winter. There is something important we have written into our Terms of Engagement forms for Nature Kids and ..read more

No such thing as bad weather...

Just bad gear… You’ve probably heard this saying or something similar before and it is a notion I fully embrace with the Nature Kids and in my Nature Education Teacher Training. So much so that I have it written into our Terms of Engagement form, to raise awareness and let parents and teachers know, we connect with and explore nature in all weathers. To me, bad gear can mean not having the right clothes for the weather, or the right attitude towards the weather. I've never understood why people comment that the rain is bad, or other similar not-so-nice (poor weather, haha) comments about the ..read more

What is Nature Education?

Children are our greatest legacy, Nature one of our greatest teachers - Dr Rangimarie Turuki Arikirangi Rose Pere I love this quote and the idea of nature as a teacher, indeed I believe nature is the ultimate teacher working in collaboration with the child and the adult to guide, support and encourage this connection. It is the perfect collaboration in learning and for me the ultimate in education, it is Nature Education. Well, there is a bit more to it, but that’s a wee overview of my philosophy of Nature Education. This philosophy has been informed by over 20 years of experience working wit ..read more

The benefits of time spent connecting with nature are enormous. Being in nature helps develop curiosity and creativity, both important in nurturing a life-long love of learning. It builds confidence, resilience, and improves mental, emotional, social and physical health, all backed by research. Our Professional Development Programme and In-class Resource has been developed from extensive experience in nature education and is backed by converging evidence which states…experiences of nature boost academic learning, personal development, and environmental stewardship (Kuo et al. 2019). Nature Library

Autumn is upon us, I am loving the changing season, the cooler mornings and evenings and the diminishing light. I love witnessing the subtle letting go of nature as Autumn unfolds, a gentle reminder to let go of the old, embrace change and slow down. Connecting with nature in Autumn is so special, it is the perfect combination of cool air and warm sun on your face. The changing colours, the bright oranges, yellows, reds and purples, as well as the green returning after a hot dry summer. It is magic! I've created a list of Nature Experiences for Autumn to support you in connecting with the sea ..read more
