Vegan banana chocolate chip pancakes

It’s no secret I eat a lot of pancakes. Both in restaurants and cafés, as well as making them at home. When the pandemic first hit, and we all found ourselves with a lot of extra time on our hands, I took to making rather extravagant working from home brunches. This included refining my pancake game and testing out some new variants. As an avid banana bread lover, I’ve often got some overripe bananas laying about, so I decided to see if I could use these up in different ways. Plus, I don’t need to remind you of the time when eggs were suddenly very difficult to come by in the superma ..read more

Malika | Indian dining at Brighton Marina

In Brighton and Hove, we’re very blessed to have access to such a variety of cuisines on our doorstep – and not just the Anglo iterations either. Where Indian food is concerned, we’ve got food outlets serving up authentic street food and Indian snacks, specialist supermarkets offering hard to find produce and ingredients and restaurants dedicated to regional dishes, like Punjabi or Bengali. I love Indian food. Having been lucky enough to visit India twice so far in my life, I like to think I have a fairly good feel for the cuisine and love making curries, naan and roti at home. So when the tea ..read more

Last week, I had the pleasure of visiting The Vurger Co., the latest addition to Brighton’s indie (and vegan) fast food scene, to preview* the menu ahead of its grand opening this weekend, Saturday 11th July. The concept of The Vurger Co. came after years of co-founders Neil struggling with stomach issues and discovering the exciting possibilities around plant-based living during a trip to California. Beginning as a market stall in 2016 and running successful pop-up events and catering, by 2018 founders Rachel and Neil opened their first restaurant in London. The Brighton store is their ..read more

English’s of Brighton

I was recently invited* to English’s of Brighton for a rather special lunch along with my foodie pal, Eshé. English’s of Brighton is the oldest seafood restaurant in Brighton, having stood in Brighton’s Lanes under its current ownership since 1945. Its full history, however, is said to date back even further – over 150 years! Situated in the lovely, historic little nook in East Street, English’s always stands out as the original and authentic seafood destination; with its gorgeous painted exterior, sunny yellow brickwork and splashes of flowers adorning the exterior. So there I went to find ..read more

Indian Summer is one of Brighton’s long-standing Indian restaurants. Originally founded by Minesh Agnihotri, now founder of The Kari Club, and Byron Swales, the restaurant has proudly stood since 2001, bringing authentic regional tastes of India through a diverse team of talented chefs. I’d visited just once before with a couple of friends and been super impressed by the food and service, so was really excited when they got in touch just before Christmas to invite me in and try out the winter menu.* Starters The first thing that struck during my visit to Indian summer was how knowledg ..read more

How to make fluffy, American-style pancakes

I have a thing for pancakes. It’s pretty much my default brunch choice and regular weekend craving. You’ll probably have noticed they feature heavily across my Instagram feed or breakfast review blogs. Believe it or not, despite being such a simple dish to make, pancakes do vary everywhere you go and people can fuck them up (see my review of Trading Post Coffee Roasters), so, yes, I do have them a lot. With Shrove Tuesday (otherwise known as Pancake Day, the national holiday) fast approaching, I thought I’d share my recipe for sweet, delicious, fluffy American-style pancakes. Then we’re goi ..read more

Veganuary (and Vegruary?) at Bill’s

Officially entering its sixth year, Veganuary has come around once again. With more and more big brands jumping on the bandwagon to bring out dedicated vegan menus or products, it’s become a more attractive challenge than ever before – in fact, Veganuary predicted that this January would see a 183% increase in people taking the pledge! Whether you see it as a gimmick or a gift, it’s positive to see much more choice amongst mainstream restaurants, retailers and supermarkets for those with particular requirements. Despite not taking the pledge myself (don’t judge me), I was excited when the B ..read more
