We’re Moving to Australia…

To say 2020 is filled with uncertainty and change would be an understatement of dramatic proportions. On a global scale we've had not only Covid-19 to contend with, but the ripple effects of dramatic economic downturns, the horrific Australian bushfires, the Black Lives Matter movement, and the closing of a swathe of industries that support thousands of livelihoods. Rippling underneath it all is a pervading sense of uncertainty for the future. So what better time to make dramatic life decisions, eh? Nothing has played out in our lives this year as we thought it would. Through months of uncer ..read more

Summer weekend in Graz - What to see, do and where to swim!
Austrian Adaptation Blog

Taking a summer weekend escape to Graz is the ideal underrated getaway this year, with plenty to see,do and eat, but more importantly, some gorgeous locations to cool off and even spend days beside the water. While areas in Tirol and Salzkammergut are completely over-booked with Austrians staying away from Italy for the summer and adventurous Germans flocking to lakeside shores, there's an ideal alternative with plenty of availability which most travellers don't realise can offer the same experience. A city break holiday in summer. Because the thing is, locals live in cities during summer t ..read more

Where to travel in Austria in Summer
Austrian Adaptation Blog
by Carly Hulls

I don’t want to jinx it guys, but…it looks like this lockdown might be easing up soon. Which for many of us begs the question - where can we travel in Austria for summer when lockdown lifts? Most of us will likely just be happy to get out of our homes and see one or two friends again (human interaction! Whoo!) but with summer creeping up, the idea of a getaway and enjoying the outdoors is absolutely irresistible. While I adore slow travelling in Italy, Slovenia and across Europe, the truth is, Austria has some pretty stunning locations that we can enjoy safely, within the government mandated r ..read more

This series of weekly letters is designed to support, distract and share first hand experience from Austria during the time of the Covid-19 lockdown. You can see previous letters here and here. With the end of March merging quickly into April, and my regular monthly round up winging its way to inboxes, these two weeks have melted into each other. It seems to be the way of these strange days - that are becoming less strange the longer they last. What life is like in Austria during Lockdown The sunshine is slowly coming back, warming up our morning walks through empty parks. Parks filled w ..read more

This series of weekly letters is designed to support, distract and share first hand experience from Austria during the time of the Covid-19 lockdown. You can see previous letters here. Hey friends, how are we going? Two weeks down in Austria and isolation time is slowly unrolling across the world. What's been interesting for me as an immigrant, with family in the UK and Australia, is gauging how different countries have responded to the crisis. Let me do a GIANT 'I am not an expert and please check official sources' disclaimer here, but overall, it has felt like Austria responded relatively s ..read more

What else can we do, but write, read and hope? To be here, try now all the things we 'never had time for before'. I've found myself swinging between 'this is amazing the world needed a reason to slow down, and this is it!' and despair at the fact that all the plans, all the big ideas I had for this lil travel blog and my business have been essentially shot to shit in the last week. So maybe, in the meantime, we can return to what blogging used to be - or can be, on its best days. A way to connect, to comment (remember those??!!) on each others writing, to share the basic things that are getti ..read more

My favourite books of 2019-2020

You have to love a good wrap up of the best books read for the year, right? Living abroad, I am constantly on a mission to keep up to date with good books, and love nothing more than scouring podcasts and my favourite blogs to find my kind of books, only to devour them far too quickly. In Vienna, I adore wandering Thalia bookshops (the Mariahilferstrasse store has an excellent English section) or Shakespeare & Co. bookshop for hidden treasures and stories that help switch my brain off and transport me to other worlds. For this years wrap-up, I thought I'd sort my favourite reads into 2 se ..read more

A comprehensive How-To guide for navigating naked saunas and therme culture in Austria - brought to you by a bonafide fan of this relaxing cultural tradition. 'But will I have to get naked with strangers?' By faaarrrr the question I get asked the most by newly arrived immigrants and horrified Aussie mates when we start talking about the Austrian therme culture and how amazing it is, is 'What about the whole nude sauna thing?' Look, I get it, in most Western cultures being nude in a sauna is SCARY and sexualised and confronting and weird. We have a helluva lot of hangups about our bodies and ..read more

2019 Year in Review: What a doozy.
Austrian Adaptation Blog

I don't even know where to start with this annual review of 2019 - a year that has taken turns I never saw coming, but somehow brought me back to myself, and cleared the way for future success. It's been hard, and harrowing, and heartbreaking, and I hope, the making of me. I tried to think of creative ways that sharing the story of this year could be useful to you guys reading it - income reports (blergh), lessons learned (bit sanctimonious, no?) or just going month by month breakdowns, but I don't think that serves anyone other than my ego and maaayyybe the stickybeaks amongst us all. Ultimat ..read more
