In such uncertain times as these, it is natural to think about the impact on next career and life steps, and perhaps the pause provided by lockdown has even provided a chance to think about changing direction a little. Reflecting on this, I thought it might be worth writing a short post looking at my experience switching field from theoretical physics to genetics for my PhD. I know many other students here write about the adjustment to a new city, or living in the UK for the first time, but as I’ve ..read more

The Association of Commonwealth Universities is an international organisation dedicated to building a better world through higher education. International collaboration is central to this ambition: by bringing universities together from around the world – and crucially the people who study and work within them – the ACU helps to advance knowledge, promote understanding, broaden minds, and improve lives.
Among many of their activities, yearly summer school in a partner university is a wonderful arrangement to bring multicultura ..read more

…by Georgia / from Scotland / studied MBChB Medicine / graduated early in 2020
I am Georgia, a newly qualified doctor having just graduated from the University of Edinburgh. I went to school in Edinburgh and attended various Reach events before applying to medicine. You may have seen me helping at Reach events over the past few years and I have now been asked to give you an overview of how COVID-19 has affected my final year as a medical student.
I am usually someone who likes to be well organised and have a concise plan for my time. But along with most people in the UK, and the rest of the w ..read more

My name is Stuart Reid and I am one of the newly qualified junior doctors! I am from Edinburgh originally, going to Boroughmuir High School, and was involved in the Reach programme both as a school student and throughout medical school.
I sat my final medical school exams in February and found out that after 6 years of hard work I had passed finals when on my elective in Kathmandu in Nepal. All was great until unfortunately I had to return home on my second week in Nepal because a lot of the airlines were starting t ..read more

…by Rory / from Scotland / MScR Biomedical Sciences / 1st Year
Thinking about applying to the MScR Biomedical Sciences course? Or been accepted and wondering what to expect? I am going to tell you a little bit about a few of my first experiences and some things I wish I had known before starting the course.
Why this course was right for me
First of all, one of my main aims in life is pursuing a career in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) research. With the vast complexity of the disease, it is important to hone in on a specific area which you find interesting and perhaps base a career on. I ..read more

I hadn’t really expected to be given the chance to live the life of a 15th century Scottish Laird as part of my PhD, but one of the advantages of being a member of a large research group is the tradition of an annual retreat. This year, my supervisor arranged for us to decamp to a castle just outside of Edinburgh for three days of serious scientific discussion and reflection. We managed to talk about science and our plans for future research, but we also tried falconry, archery, went hiking in the fo ..read more

Well, I should be in Paris right now. What else would I be writing about but how much life has changed in the past few weeks?
I’m lucky enough to be able to work (mostly) effectively from home, and to be in good health at present, unlike so many others. I’ve adapted fairly swiftly to my new routine – my flatmate usually works in his room, so I’ve claimed the living room. With the amazing weather recently, it’s been nice to sit and work with the window open for some sunshine and a light breeze. There ..read more

There is no boundary and limit to learning, we can learn all the time/anytime. Learning could be accomplished through watching, listening or just travelling. The medium of learning could vary largely. Being a citizen of a developing country, my understanding was education is nothing but attending classes in the closed classroom. This concept was first smashed in 2011 once Queen’s University Canada brought an online distance learning diploma programme to my organization through a project link. I was curious, tried 2 to3 times t ..read more

If someone asked me years from now, this is the one word I would use to describe what living life in early 2020 was like. It is of course entirely unnecessary to describe in detail the current situation, as countless words have already been written and spoken about it. And unless you are a hermit living in a remote island without any link to civilization (which is very unlikely, because then how are you reading this post?), your daily life has been affected in multiple ways already. Personally, I have been fortunate eno ..read more
