Mystery Photo Where is it? Last week’s photo was taken from the Ploenchit BTS station, next to the Rosewood Bangkok Hotel, looking towards Soi Nailert. This week’s photo is from a very central location which I am sure many Stickman readers walk past this place every day. This photo is current, having been taken in the past week. It does not always look like this. One long-time reader dropped me a note this week and explained how he managed to figure out the location of last week’s photo. “This week’s photo was pretty easy to figure out. I printed it out and looked at Google Map ..read more

2024 LPGA Honda Championship Chon Buri— final round, Sunday Feb 25th I’ve always wanted to see the professional lady golfers compete in Pattaya. There are many young and pretty female golfers playing, including this year’s winner—Thailand’s  own 24-year old Patty Tavatanakit. She pocketed 255,000 bucks for the win. A typical men’s tournament winner is near 2.5 MILLION bucks! These girls spend their whole lives doing golf and they deserve more. Just all the international travelling they do, in and of itself, is a bitch. I haven’t been to Thailand in about six years, ever since the meet-up ..read more

THAILAND – MALAYSIA – SINGAPORE – LAOS By Mega   Website: megaworldasia          YouTube Channel: Megaworld Asia   THAILAND Phuket: I arrived back in Phuket a few days into the new year. It was the very peak of the high season and the traffic congestion on the roads was chaotic. The distance from Phuket Airport to my condo building is 32 km. It took over an hour to get there. The first half of January isn’t a good time to be in Phuket if you’re looking for a relaxing time on the beach. The numbers coming onto the island are probably ..read more

Thinking About The Pattaya Of Old

I used to enjoy Pattaya in the years around 2003 – 2010. And I agree with Stick’s latest column Peak Pattaya that those were the golden days of Pattaya. I bet lots of fun had happened there before and lots of fun after, but for me, those were the days. What happened? The first big change was the sudden influx of Russians, especially from Siberia. Suddenly the Thais got confused when they saw a white man. Was he a Westerner or a Russian? That’s about the same time I felt the attitude towards tourists dropped. Russian signs popped up and the condo market changed. Then came the Arabs, then the Ko ..read more

Pattaya has shaken off its seedy reputation. What was once a playground for middle-aged white men is now very much a family holiday destination. For many of us, the Pattaya of today is rather different from the Pattaya we first knew. I first visited Pattaya in July, 1998. It was a novel choice of location for a language school training trip. After a day of training, 30-odd foreign teachers were let loose on Sin City, many of us visiting for the first time. You’d think those who knew Pattaya would have some advice for us. And they did, but it was hardly the advice I would have given some ..read more

Dramatic Visa Fees Increase

Late last week the Thai embassy in New Zealand published its new visa rates schedule online. From March 19, the embassy itself won’t accept visa applications anymore and all visa applications must be made online. With the new online system, the fees for a visa to Thailand have increased dramatically. There has been disbelief and shock at the massive increases in visa fees which will see a single-entry tourist visa increase in price from $NZ 60 to $NZ 300. A single-entry non-immigrant visa (the visa needed for a work permit or a retirement visa or a marriage visa) will increase in price ..read more

Website: www.megaworldasia.com YouTube: Megaworld Asia   CAMBODIA 2023 – 2024   Phnom Penh – December 2023   Phnom Penh: I arrived in Phnom Penh on Xmas Eve. It might seem an odd time to be traveling but the crowds and traffic congestion in Phuket had reached a point where I just needed to get out of the place, even if it was one day before Xmas. Phnom Penh, although noticeably busier than my visit in 2022, seemed relaxed in comparison. After two flights with Bangkok Airways, from Phuket, I was happily ensconced in my room at the LUX RIVERSIDE HOTEL by around 7 PM. The ..read more

Foreword: Sawadee2000 was one of the most popular contributors to the readers’ submissions section of this site in the site’s heyday. His tales of everyday life in Thailand, from initially moving to the country to the trials and tribulations of building a house, to working as an English teacher, to his ongoing health issues and later, issues with his Thai wife, he was a real readers’ favourite. His writing had a charm and he had a strong following. Like I say, Sawadee2000, real name Larry, had numerous serious health issues. Way back in April, 2010, he composed this submission and asked ..read more

February 2024 Trip Report

I have just returned from a month or so in Thailand so I’ll provide a little trip report for what it’s worth. It started out quite unusual weather-wise. I arrived mid-day instead of the usual midnight time. I noticed right off when exiting the airport that something was missing. It was not the normal stepping into a blast furnace feeling. I greeted my taxi guy and his cohorts awaiting their passengers and when asked how they were they all replied NOW!!! as in cold. It was a pleasant 25 C. Coming from a northern climate, this was a welcome relief. Those mild temps lasted most of the firs ..read more

Rule #35: DON’T BRING COAL TO NEWCASTLE
Stickman Bangkok | Bangkok Guide Blog
by Bangkok Byron
1M ago
Note: Rule numbers refer to the book version of these rules, which will be available on Amazon soon. *** This rule is based on an old British saying, so I should begin by explaining it. “Coal” is that black stuff that used to power everything. When I was a boy, one of my chores was to get up first and light the fire, which was the only heating in the house. It powered the railways, before they were dieselised and British industry before it was globalised. “Newcastle” is a city in the north of England famous for Newcastle Brown Ale, canny lasses, the Geordie accent and, formerly, coal. A ..read more
