Dog and Cat Sitting in Toronto

Granted, this has almost nothing to do with T.O.F.U. as a magazine, but I felt like getting a new post on this site might be a good idea. Since I haven’t done anything with the magazine since I announced the hiatus (yes, I’m still debating bringing it back so it’s not really, really over yet), this little update is going to have to focus on adorable animals instead. Cool? As some of you may know... Source ..read more

Review | Tofuture Tofu Press

If you were to take a look inside my fridge at any given time, you would see no fewer than three to four blocks of tofu of varying levels of firmness and size. There may also be some leftover tofu scramble in there somewhere, and maybe some smoked tofu cut up for snacking. I panic buy my preferred brand of extra firm if there are only a couple left on the shelf at the grocery store, and love any opportunity to visit my local tofu factory, Ying Fat, here in Edmonton, AB. Once, my dog, Xena, scarfed down three bricks of tofu that I’d placed on the counter for a MINUTE, and it is the only time I ..read more

Review | Oh She Glows for Dinner

Angela Liddon of Oh She Glows has come out with her third cookbook, Oh She Glows for Dinner. I have been waiting to test this cookbook for what feels like eons, but what has probably only been a year. I was a recipe tester during the cookbook development phase, and what I tested got me excited for the final product. Add in my preference for dinner and hatred for classical breakfast fare and this book’s focus on glorious savoury dinner (all 352 pages of recipes, gorgeous photography, and resources), and I was beside myself. I am pleased to say that the final product is a solid cookbook with goo ..read more

T.O.F.U. is Fucking Dead. A lot of things have led up to these decisions, and for some of you they might not even be a surprise. However, I figured I should probably put it out there instead of just letting things go quiet. Long story short, I’m going to stop doing my Where Am I Wednesday videos, as well as the monthly newsletter for the magazine. More importantly, I also haven’t really been working on the magazine for months now, and I don’t see that changing at any point soon. So, I’m declaring a hiatus on all of these things. It’s not necessarily the end, but I certainly don’t know when/if ..read more

WAIW | Reaction to the USA Election (2020)

In what seems like the longest day in the lives of so many, the American election is (sort of) coming to a close, and many folks are left (once again) wondering how it could be so close. Granted, the truly final results may not be know for some time due to mail-in ballots and other things, as well as the possibility of a lengthy legal battle, but the current standings of both Donald Trump and Joe Biden have surprised plenty of folks. Personally, I’d love to say that I’m shocked Biden isn’t riding a landslide victory right now, but I’m not. The United States of America has problems, and Trump i ..read more

TW: discussions involving blood and needles. Following-up on my previous post about possibly being vitamin B12 deficient, I thought I would talk a little bit about my newfound financial privilege and what it has meant to me being able to address my current health issues. More importantly, I also wanted to touch on the fact that wealth shouldn’t really be the deciding factor as to whether or not one is able to live a healthy life. As a Canadian, it’s something I kind of took for granted for most of my life, but I’ve become much more aware of it while travelling. Even though I’ve been able to pa ..read more

WAIW | Harvesting Bitter Melon

Admittedly, there are not that many vegetables that I don’t like (so far), but bitter melon is one of the ones that makes the list. It’s pretty common here in Vietnam, and there are some cultural reasons for it. So, when my partner suggested we harvest the bitter melons that we’ve been growing in our urban garden so that she could cook a dish for me to try, I decided I would give bitter melon another shot. Find out how that went, and see how much our garden has grown, in this week’s WAIW episode. Pin It The post WAIW | Harvesting Bitter Melon first appeared on T.O.F.U. Magazine ..read more

WAIW | Am I A Vegan With A B12 Deficiency?

Although there’s plenty of evidence to suggest that a vegan diet can be healthy at any age for many people, the need for a B12 supplement is something that not enough of us within the vegan community talk about when it comes to nutrition. Personally, as a long-term vegan (10+ years), I’ve had a number of ups and downs when it comes to my health. Lately, I suspect my biggest issue relates to a B12 deficiency, and there’s a number of reasons why. As I explain in the video, I could have easily addressed the issue much sooner, but I didn’t. If you’re vegan, please research a great B12 supplement t ..read more

TBT | I Don’t Like Durian

It looks like I’m doing that thing again where I throwback to something I posted yesterday over on my personal site. I’m a lot busier than usual thanks to Snorble®, so I’ve got to save time while creating content somehow, right? Try as I might (and I have tried several times), I just don’t like durian. Known as the “king of fruits”, it’s a popular item in markets here in Vietnam and other parts of SE Asia. Not only that, but plenty of people from all around the world have fallen in love with the king and spent a pretty penny to be able to eat it outside of this region. Of course, plenty of oth ..read more
