One question I’m always surprised to see in my inbox and DMs is “Do you really make money from your art?”.  I know there are a lot of nay-sayers out there who believe that it’s nearly impossible to make a living from your art, but I also know that with the right mindset and strategy, nearly anyone could do it!  I’ve seen so many artists go from making $0 to making a living in under a year, while others get stuck at the “$20 a month on print-on-demand level” for years. What is the difference between these two types of artists?  Let’s break it down into a few key strategies th ..read more

3 Easy Steps to Draw Any Animal
Liz Kohler Brown Blog
by lizkohlerbrownsite

I spent far too long avoiding incorporating animals into my work because I worried I would do it “wrong”.  Then once I started putting them into my work, they quickly became my bestsellers and most-commented-on products in my portfolio.  Why did I avoid drawing animals for so long? If you’re like me, you may have worried that if you can’t draw animals perfectly, then you shouldn’t bother at all.  The truth is that buyers and licensors love animals with some quirky personality, so having the goal of perfection is truly not necessary! In this post I want to share with you my ..read more

5 Paths to Surface Design
Liz Kohler Brown Blog
by lizkohlerbrownsite

I am a firm believer that there is no “one way” to get into surface design, because I’ve interviewed so many artists over the last few years inside The Studio and they all have taken completely different paths to achieve their surface design dreams.  I myself stumbled into surface design by accident through sharing my work online and you could say “the rest is history” because it literally changed the trajectory of my life (in a quit your desk job and become a full-time artist kind of way). In this post I want to share five of the most common paths I see artists take to get to surface d ..read more

How Bad SEO Is Ruining Good Artists

I’ve been doing this job of making art and teaching others how to do it too for over 5 years, and during that time countless creatives have sent me their print-on-demand shops and licensing portfolios along with the question, “What is wrong with my art?”.  These creatives are often on the brink of giving up art for good because they can’t seem to make sales or secure licensing contracts leading them to believe that their art is just plain terrible. They are usually surprised when I tell them that no, your work isn’t pure trash like you’ve convinced yourself it is, but that no one cou ..read more

Procreate or Affinity Designer: Which One is Better?

In this post I’m going to answer one of the most common questions I get from both beginner and experienced artists: Which app is better, Procreate or Affinity Designer?  This is a difficult question to answer because there are very different uses for the two apps so which one is “best” depends on what kind of art you want to create. Below I’ll share my thoughts on both apps, and help you make a decision about which one is right for your process and goals.  I’ll be breaking the considerations into sections so you can jump right to the ones that pertain to your work. Let’s dive right ..read more

How to Make Patterns Faster by Improving Your Workflow

I hear from so many hopeful pattern designers that they love making patterns, but struggle to build a portfolio or fill a print-on-demand shop because of the time it takes to make each pattern. I have made over 6000 patterns in my life (yes that includes color versions, but I’m still bragging about it) and have developed a process over the years that cuts out all the fluff and gets straight to the meat of making patterns. In this post I want to share all the parts of my process that speed up my pattern making, so you can start shaving time off your process too!  Let’s dive right into th ..read more

There has been a lot of talk going on about Society6 these past few weeks since they announced their new plan to charge a monthly subscription for selling on the platform, and honestly there’s been a lot of talk about them BEFORE that because so many artists were seeing their sales drop.  In this post I want to share my experience on Society6 over the years and tell you how I’m moving forward! How It All Started My husband and I started uploading designs to Society6 in 2017 because after building a successful Spoonflower shop together, we realized we had a lot of designs already mad ..read more

My Surface Pattern Design Story

When I shared a bit about the story behind my path to becoming a surface designer in an Instagram Reel a few weeks ago, I never would have guessed that it would become one of my most viral Reels ever!  I’ve never had more comments on a Reel, or had anyone tell me they cried while they watched one of my Reels before this, so it was clear that this topic was speaking to other artists. So I thought it was time to expand on my story a bit and share some of the things over the years that helped me get to the next level in each part of my surface design journey. The Fire Went Out I starte ..read more

The Making of a Pattern Collection

Creating pattern collections used to be something I feared and dreaded.  I had so much uncertainty around what my process should be, how many sketches and patterns I should make, and how many colors to use.  It just wasn’t fun to spend the whole time guessing and then finish up feeling like I had done it wrong! Fast forward to five years later and building a collection is one of my favorite things to get lost in, and it’s not an easy task to pull myself out of the dreamy world of a collection and release it out into the world. In this post I want to share my whole collection buildi ..read more

The Studio is Growing!

The Studio turned 1.5 this summer and I’ve been reflecting on how much it has grown since we opened doors in January 2022.  When I first had the idea to open a membership, I had no idea that in a little over a year we would have live drawing sessions by guest artists, interviews with some of my art and design heroes, and a whole host of members achieving their huge creative goals. Of course with big growth comes lots of planning, resources, and effort behind the scenes.  In order to keep supporting our growing and thriving member base, The Studio prices are going up (for new ..read more
