Our record-breaking production Starter for Ten sadly came to an end on 31 March. This brand-new musical was a hugely ambitious, joyous riot of songs, love, heartache and humour. But behind the slick production was a well-oiled machine, even more high-octane than the action on stage and just as much fun!
So we invited Bristol photographer (and Portrait of Britain Award-winner) Cíara Hillyer backstage during a show to capture some of the action.
Let's find out a bit more about Cíara and why she decided to jump headfirst into the action!
Tell us a bit about yourself

This is an evolution of the previous Associates Scheme to create a more meaningful, bespoke relationship with these organisations that will help to expand the breadth and depth of the offer for artists in the city at all stages of their careers and across multiple disciplines.
We'll be working with four Associate Companies and two Associate Artists to provide tangible support for a fixed two-year period. You can ..read more

This includes the beginning of a new initiative that will make a five-year commitment to three writers –made possible in its first year thanks to an award from the Genesis Foundation – and the return of a dedicated Literary Department which will focus on supporting writers, stories and script development.

We take seriously our commitment to reducing Bristol Old Vic's impact on the environment.
Thanks to a grant from the Wolfson Foundation we installed a solar array on to the roof of the theatre. It went live in October 2023 and it instantly began providing us with electricity. Since then, the panels have generated 3.49MWh of electricity, enough to power around 3000 homes!
We are committed to reducing Bristol Old Vic's impact on the environment, and to share what we're learning with the wider sector.
In the last 12months we've taken some big steps forw ..read more

With Starter for Ten now the hot ticket in Bristol, we took a peek inside Set & Costume Designer Frankie Bradshaw's sketch book at the explosion of 80's costume designs that have been so carefully translated from page to stage by our brilliant team in the Wardrobe department.
Frankie talks us through her inspiration...
19 year old Brian doesn't have a huge amount of fashion sense, and just bobs about in his jeans and battered green flash trainers. He's decided though to take his Dad's old jacket to university with him, for a bit of extra love and luck.

We thought they might make a mighty double act, so we asked Gemma if she'd spare a lunchbreak to chat with Khadijah about her career in theatre, and shared her advice for young theatre makers just like Khadijah coming into the industry today.
