Cleft lip and/or palate is a lifelong condition affecting one in 700 births. A new research programme, led by the University of Bristol and thanks to funding of nearly £2 million by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), will investigate how ethnicity, sex, socio-economic status, health literacy and geography affect outcomes for young adults born with a cleft. The findings will establish how to address this variation and ensure that all young adults have the same chance of achieving the best possible outcomes. Within the past few weeks the Dental School has been active in engaging with local communities. Thanks are due to Tara Miran, who organised the St Pauls community event on Saturday 28th October, to dental students Hafsa (Year 4), Jenny (Year 4) and Sam (Year 5) for their participation, including producing games, quizzes and colouring activities, and to Phil for his expert advice, speech and encouragement to produce the most spherical bouncy ball possible from impression materials! In April 2023, Bristol Dental School was successful in receiving funding from University of Bristol Decolonising the Curriculum Catalyst Fund to host 3 town hall meetings facilitated by Lara Lalemi, Founder and CEO of Creative Tuition, and expert in decolonising the curriculum. Care home visits by Year 4 dental students

Within the past three weeks every Year 4 BDS student has visited a care home in the city to provide oral health guidance to carers. This new initiative fits within the Social Accountability helical theme of the BDS21 curriculum. Students were trained prior to, and accompanied during, the visits by volunteers from Bridge2Aid, a dental charity now partnered with Bristol Dental School. Mike Gregory delivered a hands-on impression taking workshop at the British Undergraduate Dental Research Conference on Saturday 25th February in Manchester. Mike was joined by current BDS final year students Adam Kingsley and Kyriakos Keklikoglou and Jagdeep Saimbi who is a previous graduate from Bristol who supported him in delivering the workshop to a host of undergraduate dental students from around the country.
