What Wins the Unbelieving Hearts of Our Kids?
Teach with Joy

Our children will eventually go through seasons when they question what they have been taught and raised to believe. “Do I believe this, too? Why should I believe this? Is this believable and true?” When this happened to my older sons some years ago, I was incredulous at first. My assumption was that children who grow up in a God-fearing home, where Christianity is lived out authentically, would naturally desire to follow God and love him. However, I remember a conversation with my then nine-year old son, Edan, who surprised me with difficult to answer questions about the origin of life, the ..read more

When you can’t do a lot of traveling and going out because of the pandemic, then you turn your attention towards the home, to make it a space that is both livable and lovable! That’s what happened to me during the quarantine. Being at home everyday made me hyper aware of all the areas that needed to be improved and updated. Since my kids span the ages of 17 down to 1 year old, I always decorate the home with their needs in mind. I have to marry these with what Edric and I find attractive and beautiful. This means clean lines, modern, practical, inviting, and kid-proof. While stuck at home toge ..read more

Screen-based Learning and Its Effect on Real Life Learning in Young Children
Teach with Joy

Screen-based learning is becoming an important tool for teaching young children (ages 0 to 6) foundational concepts and skills, but it’s effect on the way children learn in real life is not widely researched. There is greater emphasis on general screen-usage and recommended exposure time, and an accommodating posture towards high-quality programming. According to the American Psychological Association (2019), children between 0 to 18 months should avoid screen-time; children between 18 and 24 months can have minimal high-quality programming with the presence of an adult, and children between 2 ..read more

It’s been an uphill battle for me with my weight due to hormonal changes after surgery. From 118 pounds, after giving birth, I jumped up to 129. I was so discouraged about it for a very long time. But I chose to embrace my life stage and season, as well as do my part to: exercise (5x a week) eat well (most of the time!) get good rest (sleep by 9:30 on most days) take hormone therapy (started last month) replace one meal (usually dinner) with liquids like veggie shakes or smoothies take lemon and ginger in warm water morning and night have home treatments done by @livingwaterph for RF and dee ..read more

Finding Joy Amidst Trials

What is joy? We often equate joy with feelings of elation. And many times joy is this way, but it is also a sense of well-being, a profound peace that transcends understanding, the strength to smile when there is heartache and pain, and the choice to be thankful. Yesterday, I was dealing with an emotional six year old. In her frustration over folding her blanket to put it away, she flung herself back on to her bed to sob, hoping that someone would notice her and extend some help. My initial feeling was to ignore her. This wasn’t the first thing I wanted to see or hear in the morning. Everyone ..read more

The Challenges of Navigating Influence

I miss writing in my blog so much. I know that people aren’t reading long articles like they used to, which is one of the reasons why I opted to do more “micro-blogging” on my Instagram and Facebook accounts. However, I often feel constrained by the amount of words I can use on those formats. There’s also something dangerously addicting about these online platforms, because I start to pay a lot of attention to the number of likes, shares, and responses from people who are following me. I get a kind of high when I know that what I share is well-received and appreciated, and I find this feeling ..read more

Do You Want a Magical Winter-Wonderland Christmas?

The last time our family experienced a white, snowy Christmas was five years ago. Since then, it’s been a tropical Christmas, no snow and no winter. We can’t authentically sing songs like, “Baby, It’s Called Outside,” because almost every single day during this time of the year is still sunny and bright! The only way to have a white Christmas is to travel overseas, or to visit a magical place like “Arendelle,” which only Disneyland can successfully pull off. This Christmas, Disneyland Hong Kong has something extra special planned to highlight Frozen 2, and to transport people into a magical wi ..read more

One of my favorite vacations this past year was visiting my sister in Sacramento. A highlight for the kids was going to the Pumpkin Patch near my sister’s home. A part of me just loved the idea of life in the U.S. Everytime I am there, I am like, we should just live here. It’s a quiet kind of life in the area where my sister lives, and I like that so much. Here, the traffic, the busyness, the activities, never seem to end. However, our spiritual family is here. This is home. Our ministry is here. Our roots are here. There are so many things about the Philippines that I also love. (Personally ..read more

How to Make Your Bathroom Scent-sational
Teach with Joy

The overall smell and sight of a bathroom matters to me. If I can walk into a bathroom that is clean and fresh smelling, as well as orderly and organized, it equates to a pleasant experience. If not, I tend to judge the space as dirty, and can’t wait to do my business and leave it quickly (without touching the door handle after washing my hands. I find a way to use my elbows to turn whatever lever or knob I need to.) One of my worst nightmares would be having to clean a toilet that reeked, and had streaks, stains and grime all over it, without gloves, a mask, and proper tools to sanitize it. P ..read more
