Hello, my name is Jami Moore and I am the director of programming at Winnsboro Center for the Arts in Winnsboro, Texas. We are a small art center in a small, rural, agricultural town in East Texas, but we have a big mission! Part of our mission is to engage the community in arts education, and an ever-popular children’s art program at WCA is our summer camps. This year we had four art camps and two theater camps. The kids were so excited for the art camps! What was even more exciting for me was to watch the transformation of these kids and the expansion of their horizons as they were exposed t ..read more

By Lynne Stein – A Book Review Lynne Stein’s new publication from Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, Shedding the Shackles – Women’s Empowerment Through Craft is a personal treatise of the fascinating connections she has made through her travels around the globe discovering the women, expressions, communities, processes, economics, pride, and histories of global textile traditions. I enjoyed slowly reading the narratives she provides about the lives of these women, their cultures, and their textile traditions. Her investigations are personal and deeply fleshed out, giving the reader a solid sense of ..read more

I have always wanted to spend time in a yurt. The dwelling seems so simple on the surface, but this video shows the process of building the frame, creating the felt walls, and weaving the binding straps. The video is a bit over 28 minutes, and halfway through are the fiber elements, but it is well worth the watch! The innovation of these dwellings of nomadic cultures is truly amazing! Here’s an article on how you can build a yurt! Enjoy! The post Making a Yurt in Kyrgyzstan first appeared on Explore Fiber ..read more

My name is Bryana Bibbs. I am a textile artist, painter, and teaching artist based in Chicago, Illinois. My work comes from my personal life, struggles with daily occurrences, the ultimate striving for comfort, and trying to figure out life one step at a time. I am also the founder of a project, The We Were Never Alone Project – a weaving workshop for domestic violence victims and survivors.  I’m sure you’re probably wondering why I decided to create a project specifically for victims and survivors. The short answer to that is I am a survivor of narcissistic abuse. After the ne ..read more

I’ve been knitting since I was 8 years old, and as a woman in my 60s, that means I’ve been knitting a VERY long time! I can still remember going out at recess and standing up against the school building knitting instead of running around playing. Boys teased me about “knitting diapers”, which I suppose was meant to slow my roll, but it made me more determined than ever! Knitting helps center my emotions and calm me during the choppy waters of life, and we all know there have been a LOT Of chop lately! In fact, I just finished knitting a scarf/shawl from Purl Soho, a Cashmere Ombré Wrap Kit, a ..read more

One thing I am enjoying during this quarantined life during COVID-19 are all of the art talks and webinars that can be accessed for free! I can work in my studio and enjoy the presentation – so satisfying! This last week I signed up to attend the American Folk Art Museum’s Discussion – Virtual Insights: Judith Scott. What exactly is the knitflix knitathon? Club Knitflix began as a weekly virtual knitting club during the covid-19 pandemic as a means of staying connected. While practicing community and crafting, we also paid attention to the violence being inflicted on Black communities by the police, and talked about what we could do to support the Black Lives Matter movement and combat systemic racism.  Our idea was to host a virtual Knitathon to raise money for the Black Lives Matter movement. We invite knitters and crafters alike to join us for this 12-hour long event on Saturday August 22nd from 10 ..read more
