“We found out we were expecting Chase and we had been waiting a long time to get pregnant. We live about 3 hours from Wichita.  Since I am a diabetic, I was considered a high-risk pregnancy so I was already driving back and forth to Wesley Hospital. When I was in my third trimester of pregnancy I developed preeclampsia. On July 2, I was life-flighted to Wesley because my blood pressure was at stroke level. It was averaging 180/120 I think. They put me on blood pressure medications and kept me in the bed. The next morning the doctor came in and said ‘Well it doesn’t look like you’re leavin ..read more

The Nightingale family began their journey with RMHC Wichita on April 3, just 4 days after their tiny 3lb 7oz baby, Oscar, was born. Merilee and Quinton live with their children in Fowler, Kansas – almost 3 hours from the Wichita Metro area. After falling ill, Merilee tested positive for COVID-19 which caused her to go into early labor at 31 weeks. Merilee and Quinton rushed to Ascension Via-Christi St. Joseph Hospital on Sunday evening due to her being sick from the virus and her intense contractions caused from her sickness. The doctors felt comfortable sending them home but Merilee had a st ..read more

Doris Clementine Mydosh was born August 10th at Via Christi Hospital St. Joseph, over 120 miles away from home. In order to ensure a safe delivery, her mother Heather Mydosh made the difficult decision to travel to Wichita to have her child. This would take her far from her supportive family and friends. “When Independence lost its hospital, we knew we would have to go somewhere else,” Heather said. “I don’t know anyone in Wichita. I don’t have family here and I live 2 hours away.” When Doris was placed in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, her mother’s only concern was being close to her child ..read more

Frank Mergler and Susanne Mergler-Deuschel were at work in their hometown of Kassel, Germany when they got the news. Their twins were being born half way across the world, and 6 weeks earlier than expected. Frank and Susanne were using a surrogate who had moved to Wichita, Kansas during the pregnancy, and the twins were now being delivered at Wesley Children’s Hospital. “We were really excited. We planned to be here 2 weeks later to be ahead of the birth, but then her water broke and we had to head to Wichita not having finalized all the planning,” Susanne said. “Literally the next day we jump ..read more

My husband Brandon and I have experienced our share of loss, concerning pregnancy. We had been pregnant four times—with two losses followed by two healthy, full-term pregnancies, resulting in our daughters, Celona & Bronwyn and we was pleasantly surprised to find out we were going to have a son in mid-April of 2016. On January 9th of that year, I was taken by ambulance to Wesley Medical Center. The medical team hoped to hold off delivery of the baby until March 4th. However, Tobin Archer Hall was born via emergency surgery on January 19th, at 27 weeks and weighed just 2 lbs., 4 oz. Not ..read more

When Kathryn Patty walked into the Sleepy Hollow Ronald McDonald House on February 20th she was struck with emotion. Only a few short years ago she had stayed at the very same house, in the very same room with her second daughter, and now found herself in a familiar, yet terrifying situation. “It was overwhelming. It kinda brought back some bad memories, but at the same time it was relaxing because I was in a familiar place,” Kathryn remembered. “It was very scary.” Just over six months into the pregnancy, Kathryn and her husband Joseph were shocked by the news that their 3rd child, Saige, wou ..read more
