The New York Times interviewed Joshua Stoll, a University of Maine associate professor of marine policy, for a story on the challenge of keeping freshly caught seafood in local markets. Stoll discussed how the U.S. exports much of its seafood, a business worth approximately $5 billion in 2023. William Livingston, associate professor in the University of Maine School of Forest Resources, provided CentralMaine.com with insight into why places in Maine have a lot of fallen pine cones on the ground. Livingston discussed several contributing factors that have led to an unusually large amount of pine cones this year in Maine, such as the white pine’s three-five year production cycle and strong wind gusts. Around 300 students and other volunteers at the University of Maine assembled 56,800 meals for people in need during Maine Day Meal Packout on Tuesday, April 23 in the Memorial Gym.  Maine Day Meal Packout is organized by Honors College staff and the Honors College Student Activities Board. Honors College students have been packing meals for people in need for more than a decade, and have donated an overall 675,000.
