Celebrating Moose Hunting in Maine Moose hunting is a big deal here in the State of Maine – big for the hunter whose name is selected in the lottery; for the subpermittee who has the opportunity to assist the primary hunter; for the family and friends who make up the extended hunting party; for the guides and outfitters who have been scouting all year to make the hunt a success; and for the meat-cutters and taxidermists who help preserve the meals and the memories. The Maine Sportsman’s March, 2024 issue celebrates those hunters who filled their tags during the 2023 season, thereby qualifying ..read more

2024 – It’s Time to Make Tracks Snowmobilers have been waiting patiently for many, many months – and when a pre-Christmas rainstorm washed away the snowpack, they had to wait a little longer. But now the air is cold and crisp, the lakes and slow-moving streams are freezing over, and riders are exercising their thumb muscles to make certain they’ll be able to squeeze their throttles with great authority. The January, 2024 issue of The Maine Sportsman magazine pays homage to this most important recreational (and economic) force, staring with an extraordinary cover photograph by Paul Cyr of sleds ..read more

Maine Sportsman Readers Share Their Secret Flies – and How to Tie Them!
The Maine Sportsman | Maine Hunting, Fishing and Outdoors Recreation Blog

Innovative Maine fly-tyers create new patterns every year that become go-to flies. Then they give the flies to friends and family. Often, these creations are not widely shared, and are fished by only a chosen few. This is understandable, since if too many anglers cast the same pattern, the fish get wise to it. But this intrepid columnist sent out a request for anglers to send in their favorite creations, and with a little urging, a few agreed to share. And so, our Maine Sportsman readers benefit! Of course, few patterns are uniquely new, but instead are based on, or inspired by, earlier effort ..read more

Muzzleloader-Hunting for that Elusive Snowy Buck The loud, dry autumn leaves are a thing of the past. Now, you’re walking almost silently through the woods, your boots making prints on the coating of fresh snow. Better yet – you’re on the track of a big-bodied white-tail buck, and the chase is on. You are on a Maine muzzleloader hunt, so you know you have but one shot to get the job done. The muzzleloader season, which requires a separate license, runs November 27 through December 2 statewide, with hunters in selected WMDs in South-Central and Southwest Maine getting an extra week starting De ..read more

Tag the White-tail Buck of Your Dreams This Season Opening Day of the rifle season on white-tail deer is a magic time. Weaving your way among the colorful hardwoods, you’ve lugged your shotgun and scouted the land, ostensibly hunting for grouse and woodcock. In reality, however, you’ve been keeping your eyes peeled for sign of bigger game – V-shaped scrapes in the soft earth, and rubs on small trees that start as a way to remove felt from hardening antlers, but which transition to aggression as the bucks prepare to do battle against each other for supremacy of the forest. The November, 2023 is ..read more

Upland Game Season – A Maine Tradition Upland game hunting is upon us! Ruffed grouse (in Maine, “partridge”) season starts September 30, 2023, and ends December 30 (a Saturday). Woodcock season also begins on September 30, but ends sooner, on November 21 (a Tuesday). Daily limit of woodcock is 3; possession limit is 9. And while woodcock hunting also starts one-half hour before sunrise, hunters must unload at sunset, since the rules are different for these mi ..read more

Moose Season Starts Sept. 25! Imagine being among the first Europeans to arrive in Maine, in the 1600s and early 1700s. After a few walks in the woods and along the bogs of the New World, you’d assume you had the land-based wildlife pretty well figured out – including beaver, fox, and the occasional flag of a white-tail deer as it bounded off. And then you run into a bull moose – 1,000-plus pounds of grey-black beast, with massive palmated antlers– and your perception would quickly change. Today, moose hunting is a big deal in Maine, and it’s here – the first week of bull-only hunting season r ..read more

Focus on Bears Maine has a healthy and stable population of black bears – the largest in the eastern United States, according to state biologists. And hunting bears in the late summer gets you out into the woods, where you can scout for deer and other game in advance of the fall hunts. Whether you decide to still-hunt, hunt with dogs, or over bait, know that by hunting you are helping Maine’s DIF&W reach the goals set forth in its ten-year Big Game Management Plan 2017 – 2027. We still have too many bears – as many as 35,000 bears, well above the target population of 23,000. Time to bring ..read more
