Zack Wheeler’s six shutout innings led the Phillies to a win. | Katie Stratman-USA TODAY Sports
Zack Wheeler and the bullpen made sure the Phillies’ losing streak didn’t reach three.
You can’t win them all, so, it wasn’t too alarming when the Phillies turned in a stinker of a performance on Tuesday, ending their seven-game winning streak. But after another poor performance on Wednesday night, there was concern that the Phillies might follow that winning streak with an extended losing one.
Having a pitcher like Zack Wheeler on the staff helps prevent things like that from happening. Wheeler pit ..read more

We’re going granular, folks
Aesthetics are everything. Often time, how one thing looks defines how something is. With my travel baseball team I coach, we are constantly trying to find just the right uniform that looks good on a player. We have come up with some solid combinations, ones that make the players look like ballplayers. We’re also always harping on tucking in their jersey. “You look good, you play good!” is a common, through grammatically incorrect, refrain.
In the realm of professional baseball, the aesthetics of particular pitches help me sleep at ni ..read more

Let’s go ahead and split the series
Is it ever too early to think about wild card tiebreakers?
With today’s rubber match against the Reds, the Phillies will need to win to finish 4-3 against them this season. That means Cincinnati will have the season edge against them, which might have some implications later on. Doubtful though since the Phillies are the better team and will likely finish further ahead of the Reds in the standings. But against these out of division teams, it’s necessary to think like this.

There were some things done wrong tonight
There are nights when you know someone on the team doesn’t have it. Usually, the obvious choice is the pitcher. It’s almost instantly when one can tell if the starter doesn’t have his good stuff on that night. Other times, you know right away when the offense just isn’t going to have it in them. Bad takes, strikezone struggles - it can be apparent within a batter or two with experience. The hardest one to determine is the manager. Since he doesn’t really affect the game outside of setting the lineup card p ..read more

Nothing lasts forever
Well, the good times weren’t going to last forever.
The Phillies were due for a stinker and had it last night. Several players were playing out of position, something that is going to cause sloppiness no matter how much one practices. It showed up for the Phillies last night and ended their seven-game winning streak. It happens, but now we just have to hope they start a new run this evening.

A humbling return to earth evens the series
The streaks are no more.
The Philadelphia Phillies’ pursuit of their eighth-straight win fell woefully short as they dropped game two of the four game stint against the Cincinnati Reds 8-1 on Tuesday night.
Stellar defense that had been a pillar of their week-long string of victories was absent from the night’s proceedings. Early mistakes in the field doomed Cristopher Sanchez from the jump, as his 3.0 IP was the shortest outing of any Phillies’ starter so far this season.
Reds’ starter, Andrew Abbott, was adequate but ..read more

Can Cristopher continue coolness on the mound?
The starting rotation has really been something. A strength of the team that we were aware of coming into the season, if possible, it’s been stronger than that. Tonight, Cristopher Sanchez is trying to continue the streak and continue what has been a remarkable resurgence. As Taijuan Walker, he of the $17 million a year contract, gets ready to return from the injured list, it’s Sanchez who has earned the right to keep his spot over Spencer Turnbull.
Think about that for a bit. Think about where Sanchez was a few yea ..read more

Another ace performance from Ranger as the wins keep coming
After a textbook-definition “get-right” week in which they swept through perhaps the two worst teams in baseball, the Phillies looked to carry the momentum of a six-game winning streak into a matchup with a team much closer to their weight class.
Three weeks to the day from the beginning of their last series against the Reds – the one that saw Cincinnati take two of three amidst the backdrop of never-ending rain, Bryce’s three-homer game, and an impossibly stupid rumor about a made-up wedding – the Phil ..read more
