The Calgary Hitmen today announced the hiring of Don MacGillivray as Assistant Coach. MacGillivray joins Head Coach Steve Hamilton and Assistant Coach Trent Cassan, along with Goaltending Coach Theodore Zubot to form the coaching staff for the 2023-24 Western Hockey League season. “We are pleased to be able to add a coach like Don with such an extensive background to our coaching staff. The Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club have acquired Jason Spizawka from the Victoria Royals in exchange for a 2024 fourth round pick. “This transaction adds a key piece to our roster in the 2004 age group. Jason plays on the left and is a left shot and will be a great addition to our backend.” said Director of Hockey Operations Garry Davidson. Hockey Canada announced today the twenty-four players selected for Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team for the 2023 Hlinka Gretzky Cup. Amongst them is Hitmen forward Carson Wetsch. The tournament will take place July 31–Aug. 5 in Trencin, Slovakia and Breclav, Czechia Originally selected by Calgary in the first round of the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft, Wetsch made an impact in his rookie season with the Hitmen finishing the year with 21 points (10G, 11A). The Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club today announced the selection of Axel Hurtig in the 2023 CHL Import Draft. The Hitmen used their first-round pick, 33rd overall, on the defenceman from Sweden. Hurtig was drafted by the Calgary Flames in the seventh round (208th overall) in last week’s NHL Draft. Former Hitmen Captain Riley Fiddler-Schultz has signed a two-year deal with the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League. The Calgary Hitmen have signed defenceman Easton LaPlante to a Western Hockey League Scholarship and Development Agreement. Laplante was drafted  back in May by Calgary in the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft in the second round (33rd overall). The Calgary Hitmen announced today the 2023-24 regular season schedule. The Hitmen will begin their 29th Western Hockey League season with a home and home set with the Medicine Hat Tigers with the home opener on Friday, September 22 at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Game time is 7:00 p.m. MT. The team will then travel to Co-op Place to finish the set with the Tigers in Medicine Hat on Saturday, September 23. The 2023-24 schedule will see Calgary play 68 games with 34 home and 34 on the road. The Calgary Hitmen announced on Monday their four-game schedule as part of the 2023 WHL Preseason. Calgary will kick things off hosting the Red Deer Rebels at Siksika First Nation on Friday Sept. 8. They will then travel to Edmonton to play the Oil Kings on Saturday Sept. 9 at the Enoch Recreation Centre.
