The Calgary Flames’ turbulent transition season is over, but there could be growing pains moving forward

The Calgary Flames begin every season with a pretty simple goal: to qualify for the Stanley Cup playoffs. If you want your team to be able to do anything impressive, making it into the post-season tournament is a requirement. But this season’s expectations were hampered by the reality of where the Flames found themselves contractually, entering the season with five prominent members of the team on expiring contracts. The Flames traded away their leading scorer from the prior season, Tyler Toffoli, in the middle of the summer. During the season, they traded away five more pieces of their roster ..read more

Re-signing Yegor Sharangovich should be near the top of Craig Conroy’s summer priority list

The Calgary Flames can’t officially re-sign Yegor Sharangovich until July 1. That doesn’t mean they can’t talk about it before then — and they ought to. They really, really ought to. Sharangovich is an excellent offensive player. The 6’2″ forward is a strong skater and shooter who benefits from playing with skilled linemates while also doing his part to make them better. He’s also just one year away from potentially becoming an unrestricted free agent. The Flames held their series of “garbage bag day” media availabilities on Friday. It was a day punctuated by displays of hope, reflection, enth ..read more

Calgary Wranglers recap: Sam Morton’s two goal night not quite enough to win regular season closer

The Calgary Wranglers played in their 2023-24 AHL regular-season finale on Saturday against the Abbotsford Canucks. Going into this game, the Wranglers had dropped their last four games. Three of which were against the Canucks. They looked to change that storyline but came up short once again. The final score was 3-2 and this completed a consecutive two-series sweep for the Canucks over the Wranglers.  Lineup notes The lineup for the regular season closer was a lot more what we expect to see for the postseason. The reinforcements from the Flames made it and all of them rejoined the lineup ..read more

Jacob Markstrom’s future with the Calgary Flames doesn’t seem any clearer after exit interviews
Flamesnation | Calgary Flames News, Roster, Scores, Schedule

There are two things we think we know, folks. First, Jacob Markstrom is one heck of a goalie who had a superb campaign in less-than-ideal circumstances for the Flames last season. Second, Markstrom was not particularly happy to see his name so prominently in trade rumours in the media throughout this season. And he made that known just prior to the trade deadline. If you were looking for clues about Markstrom’s future with the Flames, you didn’t get many during the final media availabilities of the 2023-24 season. As part of the standard exit interview procedure at the end of the season, Marks ..read more

The Calgary Flames already have plenty of draft picks, but the ‘Dallas model’ requires more

If Craig Conroy is going to follow the “Dallas Stars model” for retooling this Calgary Flames team, he’s gonna need a lot more draft picks. During his “garbage bag day” media availability on Friday, Conroy spoke at length about how the top-seeded Stars are the team he’d like to emulate in his efforts to bring the Flames back to the playoffs on a consistent basis. “You’re trying to look at a team like Dallas,” Conroy said. “They had a good veteran core. They’ve added really good — hey, they had a great draft, they really did, the one draft with Heiskanen and Oettinger and [Robertson]. It’s one ..read more

The Calgary Wranglers were coming off a three-game losing streak and were looking to snap that streak to get back on the winning side of things before playoffs. They made it halfway there by picking up a point but unfortunately fell in an overtime decision. This was the fourth straight loss for Calgary and their third straight loss against the Canucks. The final score was 4-3.  Lineup notes There were a few changes to note going into this game. Firstly, a few guys who were previously injured made their return to the lineup. These were Brady Lyle and Clark Bishop. Bishop hadn’t played sinc ..read more

The Calgary Flames will be chatting with Oliver Kylington’s camp on a new contract soon

In 2021-22, one of the best stories around the Calgary Flames was the emergence of blueliner Oliver Kylington as an everyday NHL player. In 2022-23, one of the more disappointing stories was Kylington’s absence due to mental health challenges. But in 2023-24, Kylington’s return was an unabashed positive story and earned the defender a well-deserved nomination for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. During Friday’s exit interviews with the media, Kylington’s future with the Flames came up and all signs seem positive. Kylington’s in the final year of a two year deal and technically becomes an un ..read more

Martin Pospisil could be the only Calgary Flames representation at the World Championships
Flamesnation | Calgary Flames News, Roster, Scores, Schedule

The Scotiabank Saddledome was the site for exit interviews for the Calgary Flames on Friday morning. The Flames players met with coaches and management to discuss the season, briefly chatted with the local media, and then headed off to their off-seasons. Most players who met with the media asked “Hey, are you going to Worlds?” But coming out of Friday, only one Flames player was confirmed to be headed to the World Championships: Martin Pospisil, who’ll be suiting up for Slovakia. In their chats with the media (or while chatting just after the press conferences), several players indicated that ..read more
